My gamertag is more useful than a business card. I write about the tech industry, hardware, software, games, and motoring.

Even though this has been a rough year worldwide, at least we can enjoy a Samsung Unpacked event to make everything feel normal. Only this time, the event is being held completely digitallyin keeping with social distancing. This means that we got some at-home hands-on time with the newly revealed Galaxy Watch 3, ahead of launch.  Samsung’s Watch line hasn’t been properly updated in a long time. Since the launch of the original Galaxy Watch, Samsung put its fitness eggs into the Galaxy Watch Active range for a few years before cycling back to the base Galaxy Watch line. It’s…

We’ve made it this far into 2020, so we deserve a treat. Samsung has officially revealed its Galaxy Note 20 line of devices at Unpacked 2020, and they’re gorgeous.  Yes, we’re getting two Note variants this year in the shapes of the Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra. Following the Galaxy S20 family resemblance, the Note 20 features a big, beautiful display with the base Note 20 sizing in at 6.7in and the Note 20 Ultra at 9.9in.  Both of them will come fitted with 5G at launch, but you’ll still have the choice of 5G or LTE when choosing…

This is normally how a ransom attack goes: Services go down, cyberattackers request a large sum of money, the company techies get called in the middle of the night and restore services. We’ve all watched Mr Robot and that’s generally what happens. But sometimes, the only thing the company can do is pay the ransom to gain back control of its services.  And that’s reportedly what happened with the recent Garmin hack according to Sky News. Garmin suffered an outage in July that rendered a bunch of its services offline. We later found out that it was the victim of…

Being a big tech CEO has its perks — you rake in the cash and control big conglomerates and its functions. But at what point does ultimate control become the business equivalent of a dictatorship? The big four US tech corporations have only seen growth since inception. During this time, a lot of shady business deals and corporate management went down. Mostly it’s swept under the rug or marked ‘Confidential’ and everyone moves on. If someone tries to speak up, they’re neutralised. In the corporate sense of course.  This week we saw four of the top tech CEOs in the…

We can always bet on Asus to bring its groundbreaking notebooks and devices to South Africa (now to get those ROG phones here too). There’s more on the way, which is a long way of saying you can get the company’s new dual-display Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 in South Africa right now for R90,000.  Its predecessor wasn’t particularly gaming-focused, although it boasted gaming-capable hardware. The ZenBook Pro Duo was unleashed into the world in 2019, and turned out to be one of our favourites of the year. In April this year, Asus followed up with the Pro Duo, but…

It’s no secret that Fujifilm took over where Polaroid left off with its instant printer Instax range. Everyone said print was dead… Then why are these little instant cam/printer combos so damn awesome? The Instax range has gone through an evolution of shapes and sizes, all the colours under the rainbow (and questionable quality at some stages). But, with the Instax Mini 11, we’re convinced it’s on a great path. Small tweaks to the great little camera have made the Mini 11 one of our favourites so far.  Positioned as a follow-up of the hugely popular Instax Mini 9, the…

It’s strange to think that Google can easily trade with Samsung, a South Korean company, but its neighbours in China aren’t allowed Google services on its devices. But does Google want Samsung to replace its beloved digital assistant Bixby? We’re not sure.  According to a report by Bloomberg, Samsung and Google are in discussions to integrate more of its software — specifically looking at its digital assistant offerings. Google has the brilliant Google Assistant, that’s by far the most advanced in the sector, while Samsung has Bixby, which is more of a nuisance than an assistant if you ask anyone…
