My gamertag is more useful than a business card. I write about the tech industry, hardware, software, games, and motoring.

Lenovo’s Legion gaming phone leaks, looks like a streaming powerhouse We’re yet to see a gaming smartphone that can take on industry leaders like Samsung and Huawei. Not in terms of raw power -- because that’s where gaming phones have everyone beat, but rather in terms of market dominance.  One thing gaming phones do all-too-well

The Land Rover Defender has been reborn as a mainstream model for the global market — think the capability from the iconic original, paired with streamlined design. It’s a beast! Yesterday, Land Rover launched its new Defender in South Africa, so the SUV of SUVs makes its return and it looks sleek.  What makes this model another for the ages is the implementation of new tech into an older mentality. It’s still a powerful off-roader aimed at traversing just about any terrain, just like its predecessors. The Defender is iconic for a reason and, just when we thought Land Rover…

Are we even still surprised at this point? Facebook/Instagram are absolute pros at stealing features from other apps and capitalising on them. Remember Stories? Yeah. It’s doing that again with a feature that is pretty much identical to TikTok’s short video format.  We’re in no way saying that TikTok invented the short-format video. It’s been done a million times, with platforms like Vine and Mixer bringing it into the mainstream. Maybe it just wasn’t the right time? As human concentration decreases, video length also decreases. Is there a correlation? Absolutely. Is it scientific? Nah.  Plagiarising the world of apps Instagram…

What’s better than having a Netflix or Amazon Prime subscription? Well, having a device that can turn your normie-TV into a smart TV, so you can easefully watch whatever your heart desires on the big-screen in your house.  We reviewed Xiaomi’s Mi Box S a while ago, and it turned out to be one of the easiest devices to set up and use. On top of that, these boxes are relatively cheap to procure and work with just about any TV system. The same guys behind those, Xiaomi, has announced something akin to the Amazon Fire Stick called the Mi…

Introducing the beautiful LG Velvet 5G! LG sent us this handset with the Dual Screen mod today, and we’re blown away by its sleek body and powerful internals. This is, however, one of the slipperiest devices we’ve ever encountered, so the extra protection definitely helps. It features a 6.8in display with a waterdrop notch, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 5G chipset, a triple, 48/8/5MP rear camera array and a 4,300mAh battery. Making a comeback is LG’s stereo speakers and AI-enhanced sound, which helps set the optimal audio quality depending on the tracks you listen to. It’s available now in SA from…

We finally know how much the monstrous Sony PlayStation 5 console will weigh. After the announcement, people speculated on the actual size and weight of the next-gen machine. Not surprising, considering the beast specs the consoles are repping.  According to a listing on Amazon Germany (found on Reddit), the system is tipped to weigh 4.78kg. That’s almost a full 5kg, while the PS4 Pro (which is a chunky console in its own right) weighs just 3.3kg. The closest PlayStation in weight is the original PS3, which weighed in at a whopping 5kg — we all remember dragging that big boi…

Although Chinese-branded smartphone tech is just coming into SA in the past few months, locals aren’t used to names like Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi quite yet. But what these brands do exceptionally well, is reinvent and improve the technology that has existed for years.  This is especially true of Oppo, that is on a mission to decrease charging time for phones using new fast-charging technology. This week, Oppo announced that it is working on a 125W charging system that is claimed to be one of the most advanced charging options in the world.  How does it work? According to Oppo,…

We know this review comes well after everyone has already articulated an opinion on Naughty Dog’s latest AAA game. Some of those are very positive, like those of my colleague Brad, and some are not so positive, like you’ve probably seen on most of the internet. But I’ll start by saying this: The Last of Us Part II is not wholly experienced if you don’t complete the game.  This is because it’s a heavily narrative-driven game, and one that comes with more twists and turns than you’d get in a typical M. Night Shyamalan film. Each twist brings about new…

Following its announcement at WWDC, Apple’s newest operating systems have not been accessible by us ‘normies’. Now, Apple has made iOS 14’s beta available to download for anyone. Here’s how you can install it now.  First things first, however. iOS 14 brings some subtle changes to the iPhone interface, with the same said for iPadOS 14. You may run into a bug or two, as this is still in beta phase and not officially launched yet. Beta phases are generally used to test software before it launches into the world. You know, just to work out the kinks.  Here’s what…
