My gamertag is more useful than a business card. I write about the tech industry, hardware, software, games, and motoring.

It can’t be an easy task to design gaming notebooks nowadays. Bringing something new and fresh to the table is probably harder than you could imagine. A few years ago, you could just plak a bunch of RGB on it and call it a day. Not Asus, no siree.  The company’s new ROG Zephyrus G14 loses the overbearing RGB shine we know from previous models but gains a sleek, muted design we can appreciate. You may think: It’s just a metal slab. No, this is THE metal slab.  Every time we unbox a gaming machine this light, scepticism enters the…

These days anyone can be hit by a cyber-attack. It’s not lucrative to target individuals, but if you manage to hit a multi-million-dollar company, you’ve got the upper hand. Or so we’re guessing. That seems to be the case following a massive ransomware attack against Garmin, which encrypted the majority of its services and systems, taking most of it offline for an extended period of time.  This weekend, Garmin services suddenly went down as users reported issues accessing arbitrary things like its website and customer service channels. Garmin has now issued a statement, confirming that the company was the victim…

By now, you probably know about Samsung’s upcoming reveal event, hence all the recent leaks and confirmed rumour posts. Now, Samsung has given us a more solid peek at the upcoming devices in the form of a teaser trailer. It looks like we’ll see the company announce five new devices come 5 August.  Unpacking the trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BJ7fF2aQqY In the trailer, you can clearly make out the silhouettes of five devices at the start of the video, as well as at the end. Samsung isn’t holding back too much, as it’s pretty clear what these silhouettes represent. Especially if you’ve been…

Mobile gamers are gamers too, right? Are we still having this debate? Mobile gaming is a growing industry, with the format being one of the easiest entries into the pro-gaming and streaming markets. This is why Lenovo just announced their most intriguing gaming smartphone yet.  It’s called the Lenovo Legion Phone Duel, and it features 5G capability up to 2.52 Gbps (gotta stay connected, yo). Powering the device is Qualcomm’s brand new Snapdragon 865 Plus 5G Mobile Platform, up to 16GB of RAM (there’s an optional 12GB config), and storage of up to 512GB. And even though this monster features…

When buying a new set of headphones, there are a few things you expect to work well, based on the price of course. Anker’s Soundcore Life Q20 headphones cost a mere $60. But in SA, import duties and reseller markups push that price up to around R2,500.  For headphones priced over R2k, we’d expect a certain level of attention to detail, features that work exceptionally well and decent build quality. Especially considering brilliant options from brands like Bose, Sony and Sennheiser are in the country. The Soundcore Life Q20’s just don’t provide the required build quality. Luckily, the headset from…

We don’t know why, but LG has gotten an unfairly hard time from reviewers and tech press in the past. It consistently puts out decent handsets at affordable prices — generally far cheaper than other flagships, but adoption of LG phones has been slow. Hopefully, the Velvet will change that.  Remember the G5, or even the V20 — both were admirable Android phones, featuring industry-shifting tech in solid handsets. I, for one, loved my LG V20 and was particularly impressed with its camera capabilities. Now, however, LG looks set to move in a different direction, dropping the ‘V’ and ‘G’…

Although we’re used to trying out the best of the best in tech and gadgets, sometimes it’s the affordable options that make it all worthwhile. Being a gamer means you’ve got a whole range of smaller investments to make before you feel properly set up. That includes stuff like proper controllers, headsets, displays, consoles or pc components. And all of that can rack up quite the bill.  But we’ve come across two more affordable options in the headphone and controller lines available in South Africa that make the process far more streamlined. A proper set of headphones can cost thousands,…

The leaks don’t stop comin’, and now we’ve got our best look yet at Samsung’s next flagship: the Galaxy Note 20. A render of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 leaked over the weekend, though we’re convinced these leaks aren’t accidental.  Of course, the leak comes from one of the world’s best serial leakers, Evan Blass. Who posted a wonderful 360-degree render of the device, including details we haven’t seen before. It’s almost as if Samsung doesn’t even need to host a reveal event anymore, but at least we can look forward to a whole range of other devices on 5…

Forget Google Pay or Apple Pay, Vodacom is convinced the South African consumer wants to use Alipay. You’ve probably never heard of it.  Vodacom has partnered with China’s Alipay to produce something called a “super app” that will essentially allow users to make payments whether they have a bank account or not. All within this new payment app being developed by Vodacom.  Okay, you won’t only be able to make payments, the app will also allow you to stream video and make travel arrangements? So, it’s like a butler/streaming platform/digital bank account. Right. “SA’s largest mobile operator is creating a…
