Stuff never passes up an opportunity to engage with whatever Motorola’s got cooking up. Especially when it dangles a R4,000 smartphone in front of South Africa. The company confirmed the Moto G37 5G landed today, 7 August, for the mightily attractive price we mentioned above. It helps that the innards aren’t half bad, either.
We’re specifically talking about MediaTek’s Dimensity 6300 SoC that’s powering the device. On paper, it’s not all that competent, but when it’s stuck in a phone this cheap, you won’t hear us complaining. Just compare it to Oppo’s R11k A6 Pro, which houses the same chipset — albeit with 8GB of RAM compared to the Moto’s 4GB.

Even so, the folks Motorola’s targeting here likely won’t care. It should handle all the basics — messaging, photography, and streaming without a hitch. 5G connectivity is a luxury that many budget devices don’t often entertain. True, it may run into some trouble when it comes to gaming (we did say it had 4GB RAM).
There’s no AMOLED tech to gawp at, but the 6.67in IPS LCD should make do. It’s rated for a 120Hz refresh rate, has HDR10 support, and caps out at 1,050 nits peak brightness. The camera is a bit of a mixed bag. Only one shooter sits on the rear, touting 50MP specs, while the front-facing camera is let down by an 8MP one.

The 5,200mAh battery is about par for the course here. Others have taken the R4,000 price to new heights — even going as far as putting a 6,500mAh cell inside the Honor X7d. Motorola hasn’t quite managed to compete in that regard, relying instead on the rest of the package. Whether it’ll manage to entice Saffas remains to be seen.
