Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 launches this month, for a cool R50,000

We’ve long been expecting the Galaxy Fold 2, having followed its development for some time and getting an early look at this year’s Galaxy Unpacked. Samsung has officially unveiled its next flagship folding smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, and we’ve got the details you need to know.

Know when to Fold ’em

It’s surprisingly compact for a folding smartphone. The handset has a 6.23in outer display (816 x 2,260), which makes use of Corning’s new Gorilla Glass Victus. Which pretty much guarantees that the outside of the Fold 2 will be as tough as you need it to be. But… we’re not about to drop it to find out. Even if it seems like it’ll take the punishment, which it does — from the outside, at least.

Folded out, the inner screen measures 7.6in (1,768 x 2,208). It’s Samsung’s typical AMOLED, meaning the image is bright, clear and has the sort of black sections you could get lost in. Yes, there’s a noticeable crease in the panel — the side effect of the new and improved hinge. It’s a serious mission to get moving with a single hand, meaning it’ll stay where you put it. That’s a good thing, in case it’s not obvious.

Inside is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865+, which is unusual to see in South Africa. Expect 12GB of RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of storage. There’s a triple-camera arrangement on the outside of the phone, consisting of three 12MP sensors, and there’s a dual 10MP selfie shooter tucked inside. Samsung’s excellent camera skills are likely to be in place. But don’t expect that this admittedly-gorgeous tech is going to come cheap.

The price of fame

Here in South Africa, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 goes up for pre-order from 7 September. It’ll ship and hit stores from 25 September and will cost you R50,000. If you’re on a contract, you’ll wind up paying around R2,700 a month to use Samsung’s best folding smartphone.

Stick around because we’ll have a review of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 up just as soon as we’ve spent enough time with it. Samsung’s newest foldable seems to be quite a durable folder. Is it worth 50 grand?  That’s the question the phone will have to answer in the next few days.
