In the beginning, none of us really cared what mask we got a hold of, just as long as our general mouth/nose area was covered. As the pandemic continued, humans realised the need for more robust, comfortable, protective masks. That’s where the Hornet F-16 comes in. That’s when things started getting… far more personalised and hand-made — a mask trend we increasingly saw pop up in South Africa. Tannies donning shweshwe-style masks and people supporting their favourite sports teams or musicians on their masks became the norm. But fairly soon, safety became the major concern.  Especially following the announcement of…

Huawei’s made a name for itself as an industry-leading technology brand, pumping out some of the best consumer hardware in recent years. Following various US sanctions against the telecoms company, it has seen a 42% decrease in smartphone sales in Q4, leading to the company looking into other revenue sources. Like artificial intelligence in pig farming and coal mining.  Yup. You read that correctly. According to new reports, Huawei has turned to two of China’s largest industries (China’s home to about half the swines on planet earth). The BBC reports that Huawei is working with farms and mines to help…

We all know at least one of ‘em. They fawn over vinyl records and collect speakers larger than most people’s bed side-tables: they’re called audio geeks. What these people are after, is lossless, high-quality audio that was only supported on Tidal and Amazon Music up until now. This week, Spotify announced Spotify HiFi.  Spotify hosted its first all-around update and announcement event called Stream On yesterday. It highlighted some of its most prominent creators, musicians and podcasters. The most enticing announcement of which was the addition of its HiFi subscription tier that will provide listeners with pure lossless audio. That’s…

When Tim Berners Lee invented the internet, he did so with the idea to make sharing/linking to content free. It sounds weird, but the internet doesn’t work if businesses or people have the ability to monetise hyperlinks. Australia’s taking on social tech giants in a big way — it wants to have social platforms pay for the use of editorial work done by journalists. Fair enough. Traditionally, other publishers would have to pay for the use of a journalist’s work. Facebook holds that it’s not a publisher (ahem… which is debatable), while Google understands its place as a news aggregator/publisher. …

Will users be able to continue putting off accepting the terms? Will the app function on their phones? Or will it just boot you off it completely? It looks like… all of the…

The third-largest smartphone manufacturer in the world may be planning to cut its mobile device shipments by up to 60%. According to reports, Huawei has informed its suppliers to expect a significant drop in stock in 2021, taking it down from 189 million (in 2020) to roughly 70 million this year. Of course, the significant cutback on smartphone shipments is likely due to harsh sanctions against the Chinese telecoms company.  In 2019, the US placed Huawei (among others) on the Entity List, barring any US company from trading with them in any way. This meant it quickly lost access to…

Last year, Facebook’s Oculus launched the Quest 2 into the world. Even though the VR headset features industry-leading tech at a reasonable price, it also introduced its mandatory Facebook account login — something its predecessors lacked… for good reason.  Now Oculus is rolling out multi-user and app-sharing functionality in its Quest 2 headset. According to Facebook, the features are still experimental, which is why owners of previous-gen headsets won’t gain access right now.
