The Apple hype is not over yet, but following last night’s event the world is three new iPhones and an updated Apple Watch richer. And though those are very cool and all, we can’t shake the feeling that Apple forgot half the program at yesterday’s keynote. Like some intern accidentally deleted essential files and they just decided to roll with it. The grand event revealed three similar-looking iPhones, a watch that can sense heart rhythms and… no accessories for any of these products. If you in any way keep tabs on the brand (like we do), you might have been expecting…

Getting your snack on as you game (and avoiding greasing up your controller in the process) is a problem as old as (video game) time — so dating back at least to the 1980s, then. Microsoft has a solution to this conundrum: a greaseproof Xbox One controller. You’re just going to have a hard time getting it. Slippery customer The video below shows off the greaseproof Xbox One controller that Microsoft announced as part of a contest by Xbox Australia and New Zealand to celebrate the official release of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). The limited edition controllers are coated in a…

Of course there has to be a leak on the day of Apple’s iPhone reveal. This time we’ve found out exactly what the three new iPhone handsets will be called — and we were not that far off in our earlier speculation. The leak seems to have confirmed that iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR will be the names for the three new smartphones expected to be announced tonight. Website ATH spotted the names in a sitemap XML file on Apple’s website, that are linked to phone cases and Apple Care products. You really can’t hide anything these days… This newest leak puts…

We know… the full-fat Huawei Mate hasn’t even been announced yet but Huawei South Africa has confirmed that the Huawei Mate 20 Lite will be available locally from 5 October. This is a peculiar announcement as the Lite devices — budget versions of their fancier brethren — tend to be casually mentioned after or alongside the non-Lite ones, probably so they don’t steal any of the lime light from the flashier versions. What’s going on here, then? Your guess is as good as ours. The AIs have it According to the Huawei SA website, the Mate 20 Lite will feature…

In addition to being available on Samsung smart TVs and Android TV boxes, DStv Now can now be streamed in HD on Apple TV boxes. The app is only available on 4th generation (and newer) Apple TV devices, and if you’re still stuck with your 3rd gen box, don’t fret. Apple South Africa is playing the nice guy, because you can trade in your old box and receive R500 back. Then you’ve got a new TV box with R500 off the asking price… and then you can download DStv Now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV4GVPNd38k Interestingly, you can watch DStv for free on the…

OnePlus has officially revealed that its next flagship, the 6T, will feature an in-display fingerprint sensor. Ever since Vivo teased their in-screen fingerprint sensor at CES this year, everyone’s keen to hop on the bandwagon. We’re pretty sure this will be the next big feature every major mobile phone maker will be trying to include in their devices. In the last upgrade cycle it was notches and edge-to-edge displays, and before that it was dual rear cameras. We’re expecting the Huawei Mate 20 iterations that’ll be unveiled next month will also have in-display sensors given the (albeit very limited edition,…

We’ve caught most of the Apple rumours leading up to their event this week, including the iPhone excess (XS) and the updated iPad Pro, but what we really want to know more about is the ‘budget’ iPhone X that is supposed to feature a 6.1in LCD display. This affordable addition to the iPhone X lineup is reported to be called the iPhone XC, possibly a play on the similarly ‘low-cost’ iPhone 5C from 2013. A leaker has posted photos of what are claimed to be prototypes of the device, and while it’s evident these are not production model phones, they…

The most influential time for a human to start learning how to program is arguably in the developmental years — try teaching a four-year-old a new language. Now try teaching your grandmother how to use an iPhone. Who won? Now try it again, this time using Sphero’s programmable Bolt robo-ball. We all know Sphero as the folks who allowed some of the most-loved Star Wars droids to come to life (BB8 and, more recently, R2D2) but they’re a little more than that. Two years ago, Sphero decided to launch SPRK, an educational program for kids to build up their coding…

Every Star Wars fan we’ve come across would give anything to have a Lego Millennium Falcon centrepiece in their house, even if their significant others don’t think it goes with the decor. Or the bank account. Trouble is, in South Africa it’s traditionally been a struggle finding exclusive and hard-to-find Lego sets, so many couples have been spared the discussion… but not anymore. The first certified Lego store in South Africa opened a month ago, and they now stock the largest variety of Lego products in the country, including the Death Star, a Hogwarts Castle and James Bond’s Aston Martin…

In other parts of the world, you can get all of your communication necessities along with your entertainment indulgences from one company. Which means one bill, and one call centre to contend with when things go wrong. The appeal is obvious. Now mobile operator Cell C has launched a converged service of its own called MediaPlay. It’s something South Africa could certainly use… but will it work? Clarify, please MediaPlay gives consumers access to general usage data, minutes for voice calls, exclusive streaming data for Cell C’s Black streaming video service, and SMSes (in case you still use those for anything…
