It’ll be a while before Lego can top the 12,000+ piece behemoth that is Gaudí’s Sagrada Família set, but its next creation is arguably just as impressive, though in a different way. That would be Lego’s new Arcade Pinball Machine that doesn’t take your nostalgia for granted by actually letting you play with the bloody thing.
Playing with Lego?
The Danish brick company announced the set this week, confirming a release date of 4 July in the US. South Africa’s Lego distributor has yet to confirm an official release date or price, but it shouldn’t be too long now. We may not top the list for weird experimental tech, but plastic toy bricks? We seem to know what we’re doing.
The set arrives with a “spring-powered launcher, dual flippers, spinning bumpers and an up-and-over ramp bridge” that all need to be assembled with the 2,274 pieces before you can start racking up points. Furthering its likeness to the Space Cadet game of yore, the set lands with both an astronaut and a baby astronaut minifig.

‘Beating’ the game requires the player to hit the big asteroid target up top. Doing so reunites the baby space explorer with Papa astronaut, thus winning the game. Hit reset to start it all over. Or, simply leave it to gather dust on a shelf somewhere. We’re not here to tell you what to do with your Lego bits, especially at this price.
Although we don’t see why you wouldn’t play with this thing, especially after shelling out a pretty sizeable $230 (∼R3,780). That’s what it’ll cost to add Lego’s Pinball machine to your arsenal when it releases in July. Expect that figure to be a little higher by the time it’s ready for South Africa — but not by much.
