There’s a new motorcycle fleet on the streets, and they aren’t carrying burgers. They’re carrying SIM cards and routers. MTN, South Africa’s largest and inarguably best mobile network, has just upped the ante once again.
As part of a small pilot programme rolling out onto South Africa’s streets, it has acquired a small fleet of motorcycles hell-bent on bringing the internet to you in a timely fashion, assuming, of course, you’re in Johannesburg.
Hitting the streets, fast

Known as the Shesh@5G Motor Bike SIM delivery service, customers in select areas of Johannesburg can take advantage of the new service, which aims to please — particularly in the early stages. Those who purchase a Shesh@5G SIM card or home internet connectivity package from MTN can expect delivery in under two hours.
“This is another ambition to bring seamless 5G home connectivity to customers. As South Africa’s best and strong[est] 5G network, we are focused on ensuring that our home customers enjoy the best possible experience with the country’s most reliable and fastest 5G coverage,” says Tania Ladopoulou, GM for online and telesales at MTN SA.
“No more waiting 24 to 48 hours for delivery. No more standing in queues. With this new service, we are putting our customers first by delivering convenience, speed, and connection right to their doorstep.”

Just place an order through MTN’s online store, and a scooter will arrive at your location bearing your new internet, supposedly in under two hours. Better yet, Saffas can skip the queues and self-RICA using the new MTN mobile app (Android/iOS/Huawei) to help you get online in a couple of minutes.
MTN isn’t just targeting speed here. It’s aiming to make its services more inclusive, delivering internet solutions to those who may not have access to a traditional physical store, way out in rural areas. While inclusivity is currently limited to select areas in Joburg, the operator has plans to scale up the operation following a successful pilot.
“MTN is committed to bold innovation that improves lives,” Ladopoulou added. “The Shesh@5G Motor Bike SIM delivery service is just the beginning of our journey to deliver a seamless, modern, connected life for all.”
