Smartphones are useful in their way but, despite their processing power, have yet to displace laptops and tablets. The Amber KB 1, an upcoming product from designer Justin Mitchell, wants to change that. If the visuals and listed features for the mobile keyboard are to be believed, it just might.
Originally known as the AmberDeck, the gorgeous little portable keyboard bears no small resemblance to Nintendo’s 2DS XL handheld console. Inside where you’d expect to find dual screens and a small collection of buttons, though, is a full keyboard and a slot for you to supply your own display.
Amber KB 1 ready for takeoff
Adding keyboards to smartphones seems to be a minor trend for 2025 but if all of them look as attractive as Mitchell’s Amber KB 1 or the Minimal Phone, we’re unlikely to complain. The KB 1 was, according to Mitchell, “inspired by a need to write anywhere inspiration strikes”. One way to meet that need is to have a smartphone and this remarkably compact mechanical keyboard on hand.
It’s not exactly pocket-worthy, as can be seen by the available visuals. It’ll be compatible with new iPhone and Samsung Galaxy models, with faceplates that suit the most popular models from those brands. But slipping an S25 Ultra into your pocket and trying the same trick when it’s wrapped in a mechanical keyboard are two different tasks. It could well prove useful as a note-taking machine for students and other folks who have to record their thoughts in a hurry.
The Amber KB 1 will charge over USB and connect to smartphones via Bluetooth. This isn’t anything that other smartphone keyboard solutions don’t already do — you can connect any Bluetooth keyboard to your phone if you want to — but few achieve it this elegantly.
“The keycaps will feature a low profile linear mechanical switch for a balance between that fun clacky feel and non-intrusive sound for those of you writing in a shared space or cafe,” explains Mitchell. Additionally, the lid/phone receptacle will feature MagSafe support to keep your shiny new iPhone safe. If you’re the jealous sort, your Samsung device likely also has a compatible aftermarket upgrade that does the same thing.
As for owning one… well, you can’t do that yet but its creator has launched a website and posted a teaser or two saying that pre-orders for the Amber KB 1 will launch soon. This is one we’ll keep an eye on over the coming weeks.
