Recent years have seen automakers duking it out for the title of the cheapest EV in South Africa. Not Jaguar Land Rover, which just introduced its first fully electric Range Rover in South Africa, carrying a starting price of R3.9 million. The company is now taking orders for the car locally, hoping its exemplary specs justify the high cost.

And they are exemplary. They bloody better be, considering. The Range Rover Electric promises to be quieter and more responsive than anything else in the factory. It’s powered by two 260kW electric motors — one above each axle — and come together for a combined output of 404kW of power and 850Nm of torque. If those aren’t the numbers you’re interested in, Range Rover reckons it’ll take the SUV 4.3 seconds to reach 100km/h.
Running the show is a ‘double-stacked’ 118.5kWh battery that’ll get you 598km (WLTP) away before it needs a charge. Using a DC charger, it’ll get the car from 20% all the way up to 80% in 22 minutes. This being an all-wheel-drive and all, Range Rover says the Electric can wade through water 900mm deep.

As for the tech that’ll pad out the Range Rover Electric’s innards, we’ll leave it up to the imagination. At least until Range Rover is ready to get specific. Order books for the luxury SUV are now open, offered in a “choice of short or long-wheelbase body designs in HSE and Autobiography specifications, as well as SV, SV Ultra and SV Black.” Pricing starts at R3,916,800, to be exact, and tops out at R6,035,000 for the LWB EV550 SV Ultra model.
