Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone maker that’s taking advantage of Huawei’s sudden drop in smartphone sales (which they absolutely have to), has managed to overtake Apple and become the second-largest smartphone maker in the world.
Xiaomi the numbers
The company saw a massive 83% growth in smartphone shipments in the second quarter of 2021. This is according to research firm Canalys, who also found that Xiaomi had accumulated 17% market share, on the heels of South Korean smartphone giant Samsung at 19%. Dragging its feet at third place, Apple’s sitting at a measly 14%.
It’s interesting to note that Xiaomi’s market share grew dramatically while Samsung only saw a 15% growth and Apple only had a 1% increase in this quarter.
The main reason for this, we reckon, is that people are desperately looking for a cheaper Android replacement following Huawei’s unfortunate decline in the smartphone industry. Samsung handsets are great, but users pay a premium for that quality, and the same goes for Apple devices.
Xiaomi slid into a marketplace that was hungry for more affordable handsets — especially when looking at the mid-range to budget segments. The brand recently announced that it will focus more prominently on the South African market with its launch of the Redmi Note 10 series this week.
