My gamertag is more useful than a business card. I write about the tech industry, hardware, software, games, and motoring.

Notebooks haven’t evolved much when it comes to design since… well… they were invented. Many have tried and failed to reinvent the well-known format of keyboard below, screen on top. Most have also failed.  Until now. We can trust in Asus to bring us weird and wonderful notebooks every year. Last year we saw the company launch the Asus Zenbook Pro Duo — a dual-display laptop that features a full-sized display above the keyboard, and we could find little fault with it, just that left-handed peeps may have a hard time using the trackpad that’s right-mounted. Now, Asus has gone…

Oh, how the tides have turned. We haven’t gone this long without negative Facebook news in, like, ever. Now Facebook may be the good guy in a scenario, with Apple on the receiving end of criticism… from Facebook.  Earlier this year Facebook was developing a new feature that would allow entertainment industry peeps and influencers to charge fees for live streams through Facebook. According to Facebook, this feature is designed to help small businesses during the global pandemic. Even more, the social media platform wouldn’t take any cut from the proceeds, so individuals and businesses can pocket all of it……

Even though the recent pandemic and nationwide lockdown hurt the economy and drove people into their homes for long periods of time, many innovations have sprouted for the greater good of the people of South Africa. This is especially true of MiVoice, a new app dedicated to helping people affected by gender-based violence.  MiVoice is a newly launched app that “… offers emergency support and multi-directional communication to SA Women Fight Back members, volunteers, and supporters.” It was created by a group of women who are pushing for societal change, in a bid to help people who may find themselves…

Gimbal tech has been one of the big consumer innovations in recent years. And heading it up is gimbal veterans DJI, who has made handheld gimbals widely available. Its Osmo range of smartphone gimbals are some of our favourite gadgets ever, and it now looks like it is readying to launch the next in the Osmo line codenamed the OM 4. According to a new report from WinFuture, DJI’s Osmo Mobile 4 could attach directly to the back of a smartphone, negating the need for a bulky smartphone-clip. In a video short posted to Twitter, you can see how the…

DStv announced two brand new products that it will add to its decoder range — the DStv Explora Ultra and the DStv Steama. The Explora Ultra features satellite TV as well as streaming options, while the Streama functions more like a set-top box.  This is an interesting change to come to the Sout African broadcast TV market, with a company that may have been viewed as having a TV-monopoly in the past now adopting new technologies, and even partnering with third-party streaming services.  Earlier this year, Multichoice announced in its financial earnings report that it had signed deals with Netflix…

It’s becoming hard to tell which side is truly fighting for justice in the recent Apple/Epic debacle. Fortnite doesn’t want to pay 30% of its earnings to Apple for being listed in the App Store, but Epic’s Store itself takes 30% from developers? It’s a strange situation in which each corporation is making the other out as the bad guy, trying to bend the rules or lead customers toward the dark side.  The latest development happened during a preliminary hearing in a California court this week. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who is hearing the case, said that she is “inclined”…

This is as close as you’re gonna get to Fujifilm’s affordable range without sacrificing the ‘X’ in the title. All packed into the X-T200.  Like its other siblings, the X-T200 borrows aesthetically from classic analogue cameras from back when it was…

Even though we like writing about smartphones that cost more than a moderately priced home loan, it’s the value-for-money devices that really make it worthwhile. Which is why Huawei’s new Y5p is the perfect sub-R2k smartphone you can buy right now. It’s taken technology a minute to get to this point, but you can now buy a fully functional smartphone with a front-facing cam, a sweet camera housed around back and a hefty battery for much less than you’d expect. The Huawei Y5p features a 5.45in LCD display with no notch (no-notch gang unite!), comes with 2GB of RAM and…
