My gamertag is more useful than a business card. I write about the tech industry, hardware, software, games, and motoring.

Arguably the best instant camera format, the square shape is timeless. Which is likely why Fujifilm just revealed the SQ1 instant camera, built on the same format we’ve seen with predecessors SQ20 and SQ10. Just this time, it’s slightly cheaper and brings special features to the selfie generation.  Following the launch of the adorable Instax Mini 11, the SQ1 pack features including Automatic Exposure (that we saw in the Mini 11) and One-Touch Selfie Mode. It’s also available in a few colour variations, including Terracotta Orange, Glacier Blue and Chalk White. “Once the shutter is pressed the film automatically feeds…

Every person, online or not, should watch The Social Dilemma on Netflix. Hear me out.  How do you know you’re in the Matrix? And how do you unplug? The deeply dystopian cult classic movie from the 90s follows a man who chose to be released from the Matrix after getting a sneak peek of the outside world. A world which is… run by a super-intelligent robot that used human bodies as resources. I’ll get to a parallel soon, hang in there.  Before the prevalence of smartphones, which is a mere 10-or-so years ago, humanity had a pretty good grasp on…

There’s not a lot of things worthwhile that cost forty bucks anymore. But now Netflix is making its entire library of content available to more South Africans through two new mobile-focused plans.  What this means, is that you’ll now be able to sign up for a mobile-only Netflix package for less than a full subscription — which runs R100 a month for the cheapest one. The subscriptions are called Mobile and Mobile+, with Mobile coming in at R40 a month, and Mobile+ at just R60 a month. Both are far cheaper than the other options, but there’s a reason for…

What better thing to do than announce a few exciting new products during a developer conference? Well, that’s exactly what Huawei did with its 2020 Developer Conference this week. Along with announcing the work it’s been doing on its own OS, Huawei revealed new notebooks as well as two new smartwatches in the form of the Watch GT 2 Pro and the Watch Fit.  It’s been interesting to see how the two distinct subcategories of wearables: the smartwatch and the fitness tracker have started to morph into the same thing. All of ‘em essentially do everything smartwatches do and what…

The ongoing trade war between the Trump administration and the Chinese telecom has, surprisingly, pushed Huawei to improvise and adapt. One of the consequences is that Huawei’s access to Google’s services has been revoked. Now it’s making a plan.  Up until now, Huawei still has access to Android’s open-source programme, which allows it to run the operating system on its devices. But soon after the company was placed on the US Entity List, it announced its own OS called HarmonyOS. At that point, however, Harmony OS wasn’t necessarily destined for smartphones, but rather things like networking equipment and routers.  At…

2020 hit hard, but the Note 20 is trying to hit harder. It’s clear that smartphone makers are showing no signs of slowing down. Lost your job due to COVID? At least there’s a non-stop supply of smartphones heading your way.  Samsung recently revealed the Note 20 range of devices, of which there are essentially two: the base model and the Ultra. We already spent some time with the Ultra 5G that costs an eye-watering R33,000. Now we had some time to compare the Ultra with its smaller, more conveniently priced sibling.  As always, the Note series is pushing multi-tasking…

In a move that looks like it may benefit the Korean smartphone maker, Samsung may cease trade with competitor Huawei thanks to ever-stricter trade restrictions. The Trump administration has tightened the leashes on all global companies that utilise American tech to produce components, making it harder than ever to trade with the Chinese tech giant.  Under pressure According to a new report by a South Korean publication, Samsung and a company called SK Hynix will stop selling components to Huawei. Increased pressures from the US has led to this, and it’s becoming clear how vast the US’s foothold in the…

It’s becoming increasingly clear that the current pandemic has had an adverse effect on the retail industry — more specifically brick-and-mortar shops across the globe. Many stores have opted for an online marketplace, but it’s slightly more complicated when it comes to retail chains like Cash Crusaders, who buy and resell most of their stock from the public.  But the local reseller has finally figured out a way to digitise the whole process and launched a new feature on its website called Click & Collect. The platform allows buyers to shop online as they would with other online retailers, while…
