It’s not exactly the best-kept secret in the world but Telkom and SABC have made their new streaming service, TelkomONE, official. Or, rather, they’ve announced a partnership (which will probably allow the SABC to claim that TV licenses are now needed for devices that can stream video).
TelkomONE is a new South African streaming service, hosted by Telkom. The SABC is involved thanks to a five-year partnership that’ll see SABC’s TV offerings — SABC 1, 2, Sport and Education — and 19 radio stations streaming on the service.
TelkomONE to watch?
The service, which is available on Android, iOS and on web browsers, will mostly consist of local content, if the SABC partnership is any indication. But there’s also international and locally-produced exclusive entertainment to look forward to, including “…Thesha – a visual trip into modern-day South African youth culture, experienced through the lives of two teenage friends and Hashtag – a fun, energetic, lighthearted family-friendly talk show hosted by Sophie Lichaba, Mantsoe Tsatsi, Jarred Doyle and Francois Louw.”
Access is free, which is how TelkomONE’s going to get you (and how the SABC’s hoping to justify that TV license thing). But there are also so-called AMP packages, which will cost you between R7 a day or R49/pm. It’s a “…fast-growing, carefully curated catalogue of diverse local and international content…”, which can be paid for in a variety of ways. AMP is also the only way you’ll access Catch Up content. The options, as well as the data that comes along with each, are listed below.
• AMP Daily: R7 a day with 90MB Telkom data to stream.
• AMP Weekend: R17 with 360MB Telkom data to stream.
• AMP Weekly: R19 with 720MB Telkom data to stream.
• AMP Monthly: R49 with 1800MB Telkom data to stream.
