Hey kids, do you want to get paid to post things to TikTok? Well, you can’t, yet, but that’s because you’re not an American. The short video service has launched a US-based fund called the TikTik Creator Fund, which will see (some) TikTok users getting a cut of $200 million (or about R3.35 billion).
Money for nothing
The point of the funding initiative, according to TikTok, is to “…help support ambitious creators who are seeking opportunities to foster a livelihood through their innovative content.” Basically, it wants talented content creators to stick around and make a living on the service — the same way big names on YouTube, Twitch and similar services have made a career out of being professionally entertaining. Those Joker videos? Someone might be getting paid to make them.
This is also just the start, says the service. The $200 million is just the first down-payment — TikTok’s money pool is expected to grow over time. But, of course, there are terms and conditions.
You already know that you’ve got to be an American in order to qualify. You’ll also need to be over the age of eighteen, will have to abide by the company’s community guidelines, and you’ll need a certain number of followers before you’re considered for any of that sweet, sweet cash. If the fund makes it here, you can assume that the same conditions will apply — besides the whole ‘being an American’ thing. The TikTok Creator Fund kicks off from August this year.
