Two weeks from today, Samsung will host its newest Galaxy Unpacked event. This one will broadcast live (as usual) from London (not as usual) and is widely expected to involve the company’s newest folding smartphones. It’s not really speculation at this point, since the event’s tagline is “A new shape unfolds”.
Which lends plenty of credence to the hardly-secret Galaxy Fold 8 Wide (whichever order Samsung eventually puts the words in) being a thing. You can’t unfold a new shape unless there’s a new shape to unfold, after all. Sure, the old and new designs are both approximately rectangular, but it’s about proportions, see?

There are a few other clues about what hardware we can expect from Samsung’s showcase, but there will certainly be AI. Plenty of AI. The company is explicit about this. The announcement says that “the next generation of Galaxy devices are set to deliver more personal and adaptive experiences and set a new standard for the AI era.”
This is probably just Samsung managing expectations, given that its last few smartphone generations are… basically the same phone. This one’ll be a different shape and will have more AI (that you’ll eventually pay for). But if you’re expecting hardware surprises beyond a broader shape, you’re likely to be disappointed. At least, that’s what we’d put our money on.
The Galaxy Unpacked livestream will take place from 15h00 on 22 July — a civilised hour for South Africans looking to bunk work for a bit. Unless you’re Stuff, which will be keeping tabs because it’s work. The event will stream on Samsung’s own website, as well as the company’s YouTube channel.
