Several companies are looking at making wider folding smartphones. Huawei is one of them, but it’s not alone. But the Chinese company might be leaping right to the next logical step — wider smartphones that don’t fold. At least, that’s what rumours from that country suggest.
Unlike the Pura X Max pictured above, Huawei is supposed to have a wider standard smartphone waiting in the wings. Reports of the device have been kicking around for weeks. Now, Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station claims to have some details of what users can expect.
Huawei gonna make this wider?
The reports don’t indicate that the Chinese company is launching a much larger phone than usual. The rumoured display size is still around 6.4in — a little smaller than average for 2026. It’ll feature a 16:10 aspect ratio. That’s somewhat wider than phones used to be, and considerably wider than recent designs. It should still tuck into a pocket.
Elsewhere, Huawei’s apparent device will have a Kirin 9-series processor, a 50MP main sensor and a 50MP periscope backup. The company’s supposedly putting a 7,000mAh battery behind this thing as well. The battery may be larger, around the 7,500mAh mark.
There’s even a vague estimate for a launch date. The unnamed phone will wait until after September, when Huawei is supposed to launch its new Mate 90 handsets. After that, we could well see the wider version of a standard phone make its appearance.
It’s very likely we’ll see more unofficial information before the gadget goes live anywhere. Whether it’ll compete well with the existing crop of smartphones from Samsung and others remains to be seen. Still, it’ll be the first sign of design innovation we’ve seen for standard phones in quite some time. If it’s a hit, we can expect everyone from Honor to Vivo to launch their own version in short order.
