South Africans love their durable smartphones, and Oukitel has a few stunning examples of those. The newest is the Oukitel WP210, a 6.7in rugged monster of a device that should power you through several days of use while not skimping on other features.
A launch date has not been confirmed yet, according to GSMArena, and we’ve checked the official website to find that there’s no listing for the device either. But current images and details seem to be spot on and official enough to take the Oukitel WP210’s existence seriously.
Oukitel WP210, reporting for duty
The WP210’s 6.7in display is a 120Hz AMOLED with 550 nits of brightness, which, aside from that last stat, wouldn’t look out of place on a premium smartphone from a bigger brand. 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage are powered by a Dimensity 8200 chipset from MediaTek, ensuring that there’s plenty of speed to go around. The AMOLED panel is protected by Gorilla Glass 5, which also covers the in-screen fingerprint reader.
So far, it’s a typical smartphone… if a little budget in places. However, it’s the IP68 and IP69K ratings, MIL-STD-810H certification, and 8,800Wh battery that will make it attractive to those with an active lifestyle. IP68 waterproofing will be familiar to most, but the IP69K rating means you can clean the Oukitel WP210 with a pressure washer — up to 100 bar, if that’s your thing. The mil-spec rating is a measure of toughness, and you can’t call your smartphone ‘rugged’ without one.
The camera setup is mostly agreeable, with one of Samsung’s 108MP main sensors occupying the rear of the WP210. Supporting sensors are a 2MP macro and a depth sensor, while up front there’s a 32MP selfie cam. Why you’re taking selfies around heavy machinery is a question only you can answer.
A launch is expected sometime in August, with a projected price of R7,200 ($400). We’re not sure of local details, but there is a local Oukitel outlet to check out in the coming weeks. The humongously endowed Oukitel WP100 Titan is currently on sale there for R20,000, so maybe expect a markup on overseas pricing when it lands here.
