Huawei has kept a tight lid on its upcoming Pura 80 smartphone, but we won’t need to pry into any corners for too much longer. The smartphone maker intends to lift that lid on 11 June, showing off the sequel to a somewhat flawed but still impressive predecessor.
Huawei teased the device in its announcement on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, showing only the camera unit from the Pura 80. That’s probably not the sole design we’ll encounter, since we’re expecting a family of devices, but it’s probably the headliner.
Pending Pura 80

The secrecy probably would have held a little tighter had Huawei not accidentally posted the smartphone itself to Weibo. A comparison of this phone and the Pura 70 counterpart shows quite a difference between the two in terms of camera sensor setup. That’s probably why Huawei has leaned hard on the sensor teaser. We can guess what will get the most love during the company’s presentation.
Plenty of locations have posted specs for the pending device, notably the Pura 80 Ultra. There’s no way of knowing if these are accurate or if they’re placeholders to be fully updated when Huawei finally gets around to making its announcement.
What is likely is that South Africa will be on the launch invitation list, if Huawei’s behaviour last year is anything to go by. Even if the Chinese smartphone maker experiences the same incremental innovation issues experienced by… well, everyone lately, it should be an impressive bit of hardware to play with.
