One of the main disappointments in our time with the Pura 90s Pro was the loss of the 1in camera sensor. Huawei’s newly announced Pura 90 Plus corrects that oversight, though it only does so for China… so far.
The Pura 90 Pro was just a rumour a week or so ago, but it’s now official and on sale. There’s travel (or import fees) involved if you must have one this month. If you wait a bit, it’ll eventually come to you. In the meantime, you can pore over the official specs and the graduated purple colour option for this release.
90 Plus an inch
To get the boring (for this phone) stuff out of the way, the 90 Plus has a 6.8in 2,848 × 1,276 OLED panel in front of one of Huawei’s Kirin 9025 chipsets. International markets can choose between 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage — with 12GB of RAM. South Africa will have either the first two or just the 512GB model on offer, if previous behaviour is any indication. A 5,700mAh battery and 100W wired charging should make it a competent daily driver.
The camera spec is where this phone gets really exciting. A 50MP variable-aperture (f/1.6–f/4.0) main camera with optical image stabilisation sits on the rear of the phone. This is the critter that includes the 1in camera sensor, a big option for any smartphone. It’s backed by a 40MP f/2.2 ultrawide and a 48MP f/2.1 telephoto with 4x optical zoom. If the last Huawei phone to feature the sensor is any example, it’ll perform better than you’d expect for its price.
Base pricing in China pegs the Pura 90 Plus at R18,000 (CNY7,000), but we’d expect it to launch closer to the Pura 90s Pro’s R20,000 price point here. An international one will likely follow the Chinese launch. Our original estimate still stands — expect it some time in early 2027.
