South Africa may have dodged the PS Plus price hikes, but the Law of Equivalent Exchange seems determined to ensure we’ll experience some hardship this month. That would be the Disney+ price hike coming for both new and existing customers. The hike only hurts monthly Premium subscribers, leaving annual and Mobile subs safe.
For now.
Disney Plus R20/m
That makes the annual subscription an even better deal than it was previously, which we’re sure was Disney’s plan all along. Instead of handing over R160/m for access to Disney content, customers will now pay R180/m for access starting 4 June 2026. The change was confirmed in an email sent out to monthly Premium subscribers.
According to an FAQ on the streamer’s site, new customers have been paying the new monthly fees since 30 April 2026. “Starting 30 April 2026, the price for the Monthly Premium subscription has been revised to R179 a month. The annual plan and Mobile subscription prices remain unchanged.”
“All the existing direct-billed Monthly Premium users signed up before 30 April 2026 will be charged at the renewed subscription price on the date of renewal on and after 4 June 2026.”
We should note that the price increase has not seen any additions to the Disney+ offering, valuable or otherwise. According to the sign-up page, a Premium subscription still nets the user 4K content, access across four devices, Dolby Atmos audio, and the ability to download content. So, the same as it’s always been, then? This is Disney’s second such hike in South Africa. The last appeared in September 2024, bringing the price up to R160 from R140.
If our math is right, that should mean South Africa is due for another R20/m increase in early 2028. With the way things have been going, however, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it sooner. If you’d like to dodge the increase, Disney+ suggests paying for an annual subscription. This costs R1,590/year, saving customers R558/year. That’s… not bad, but we feel dirty for admitting it.
