Spotify’s latest update finally allows users to skip the guessing game and make some quick verbal requests directly to the app’s AI-powered DJ. Every day, users take a step closer to not having to navigate the music app, now having more than one AI assistant to sort through all the chaff and get users the music they want sooner.
Spotify makes the DJ your butler
Previously, the app’s DJ could only manually add individual songs to the playlist. This new update allows users to digitally lean on the DJ’s decks and scream out a personal request, except this time, the DJ won’t just brush you off. The Spotify AI DJ is happy to take the request and follow through with a personalised tracklist immediately.
The feature is not limited only to songs and song order. Indeed, users can also request a throwback tune to slide into the playlist next up or four songs down, but they can also change the whole playlist’s genre and mood, or even request songs that the algorithm knows they’ve never heard before.

To access Spotify DJ, users only need to type “DJ” into the search bar. The feature will create a playlist already tailored to a user’s listening history. To make changes, press and hold the DJ button on the bottom right of the ‘Now Playing’ screen until a tone plays, and then users can speak to make their requests. It only works in English, and is currently available to Premium users in the 60 markets with DJ access, a fraction of Spotify’s greater 180-region reach.
The feature is still in beta for now, but it’s hard to see a scenario where it doesn’t go global, since this seems like a really useful way to operate the app without having to constantly navigate it to make changes. Though it doesn’t work with non-music offerings like podcasts and audiobooks, and will prove difficult for people who don’t want to speak into their phone in public.
