Google has officially taken the plunge into the world of folding smartphones with its Pixel Fold device. Originally only rumoured, the device has since become official but there’s still a wait before all the details are revealed. Google will take the wraps off the device at this year’s Google I/O.
In the meantime, there’s a brief teaser video, titled ‘May the Fold be with you’ that offers a very short look at the device from a couple of angles. Blink and you’ll miss it, though. The video is a mere eight seconds long.
Know when to Pixel Fold ’em
That doesn’t that there aren’t rumours about what we can expect from Google’s I/O event. Talk about a possible Pixel Fold has been around for some time. The 2021 report was vague on details, saying only that Samsung Display would have a hand in the screen.
More recent information, via CNBC, claims that Google’s device will feature a 5.8in screen that folds out into a 7.6in panel. It’ll apparently feature “the most durable hinge on a foldable”, according to Google itself. That’s a high bar to clear. Both Samsung and Huawei are proud of the engineering that has gone into their folding devices. If Google makes them look bad… well… then it’s game on.
The only other detail is a possible launch price. According to the report, the Pixel Fold will launch at a R32,000 ($1,700) price point. Here in South Africa, the Galaxy Fold 4 launched at R37,000, while having a $1,800 international price point. It’s not like Google’s phone will see a native South African launch but we can still do the math, right?
