TAG Heuer is one of the kings of product placement, along with most other purveyors of expensive horology. It’s hard to watch a spy attempting something suave without getting a glimpse at the expensive movement on their wrist. The point is to make you want one. Generally, it works. We’d be awful keen on sporting the brand’s new Aquaracer Professional 200 wristwear.
Especially since they’re a) coming to South Africa and b) won’t cost you a kidney to own. Seriously. We checked. A kidney goes for about R760 000 on the black market, while you can legally sell one in the USA for about R4 million. A TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200 will set you back a mere R32,500. See? It’s rather reasonable.
TAG Heuer: You’re it
Perhaps best of all, they won’t be in as limited a supply as the brand’s Super Mario special edition smartwatch. There are two different sizes — 40mm and 30mm — and two different movements available for each. TAG is offering its new adornment in both automatic mechanical (you know, gears and stuff) and quartz (battery) options. The 40mm automatic devices use Calibre 5 movement, while the 30mm versions opt for Calibre 9.
No matter what you pick, you’ll find a uni-directional rotating bezel, a steel case utilising brushed metal, and up to 200-metres water resistance. So yes, they’re perfect for attending board meetings at the bottom of the ocean. TAG would likely use words like “aesthetics” and “sensorial” to describe these wristwatches. It’d be right, too. They are rather pretty.
TAG Heuer’s Aquaracer Professional 200 series is coming to South Africa this month. When they turn up, you’ll find them available online. Unless you’re the sort to spend R2.4 million on a TAG watch. In that case, they probably already know where you live.
