LG’s ambitious rollable TV, the LG Signature OLED R, has finally launched. It costs a buttload, though

We’ve been seriously keen on LG’s OLED R rollable television sets since they first turned up at CES in 2018. We were expecting them to launch to market in 2019, which they obviously didn’t (even though LG promised that they’d be available). But that’s not the case for this year — LG’s Signature OLED R has finally gone on sale. In South Korea.

The whole thing OLED R-ight here

For those that need a little refresher course, the LG OLED R (also known as the OLED RX) is a rollable TV — this means that the entire 4K 65in OLED screen rolls away into the box that houses the internals and the audio bits. The set operates in three different modes — in Full View mode, which is when the set it fully extended and then Line View and Zero View modes. Line View offers a variety of functions using a portion of the screen and Zero View is the speaker function, where this hideously-priced TV set is used as a very pricy streaming speaker.

And it really is hideously-priced. The set is available in South Korea for the equivalent of about R1.44 million, which seems a lot to pay for a television set. But it is the company’s (and the world’s) only rollable TV. As LG Home Entertainment CEO Park Hyoung-sei says, “This is a true luxury product that reimagines what television can be, this unique TV delivers a differentiated user experience and a new way of thinking about space while once again confirming LG’s leadership in the premium TV market.”
