Expect to see a local version of Huawei Pay launch in South Africa this year

Samsung has it, FNB has it, even Apple and Google have their own versions — we’re talking about digital wallets, payment options that work through your smart devices and let you pay for stuff. Now, Huawei’s also getting in on the action. Huawei Pay will be in South Africa a little later this year.

Sadly, that’s about all we know. Huawei Consumer VP for MEA Likun Zhao, at a media briefing today, confirmed that a version of Huawei Pay — customised for the South African market — will be rolling out in South Africa in Q3 this year. That’s quite a brief window, as it happens, meaning that we should see it landing in SA before the end of September 2020.

Which banks it’ll support and exactly how it’ll work… that’s something Huawei’s not going to be drawn on, as it seems they’re still setting that side of things up. It’ll definitely work on select models of Huawei’s smartphones, with information about wearable support coming a little closer to the official launch.

Right now, all that’s certain is that it’s coming and that it’s coming this year. It may not look like the international version of the Huawei Wallet/Huawei Pay, a service that is also currently being a little tight-lipped about supported banks.
