Light Start – Sideloading Google on the Mate 30, underwhelming Apple, Cool Ideas attacked and Pinkman’s back

Here’s how you may have gotten Google apps on your Mate 30 Pro — but you (probably) won’t be able to

Last week Huawei announced its latest flagship range, the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro. They’ll launch without Google apps due to the ongoing trade war with the US, but Huawei won’t allow users to sideload apps — like the Play Store. Huawei initially confirmed that it’ll allow an unlocked bootloader for their flagship phones, which is the only way users will easily sideload Play Services onto the devices. And after that, an update on Android Authority took the statement back. Huawei’s CEO, Richard Yu first said in an interview with Android Authority, that: “We limited [bootloader unlocking] because we wanted to guarantee more security for consumers. But this time we will leave more freedom for the consumers so they can do more customization by themselves. So we are planning to let consumers do that.” Huawei’s sadly already said this won’t be the case when devices roll out, but once we get our mitts on one, we’ll test out the idea. Right now it looks like side-loading thanks to an unlocked bootloader won’t be possible.

Apple launch day in China was underwhelming at best

On Friday last week, Apple’s new handsets, the iPhone 11 range, hit stores in China. That’s not the surprising bit. What was surprising is that there were far fewer people joining queues compared to previous years. This could mean that Apple is definitely losing market share in a country that’s well-known for its more powerful, cheaper handsets. The queues at the Shanghai and Beijing stores in particular, which combined added up to a few dozen customers, were in contrast to previous years.  We’re more used to seeing hundreds of eager customers camp outside stores to ensure a new iPhone in their hands by the end of the day. It’s hard to say exactly why so few people decided to opt for the iPhone 11 — it could be lack of interesting features, being overpriced compared to other locally made devices or even because of the ongoing trade war with the US. Either way, Apple’s sales may be taking a hit in the region.

Slow internet speeds? Might be because Cool Ideas were attacked

South African ISP Cool Ideas aren’t undergoing a terrorist situation but is currently experiencing a DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack in South Africa. This is the second such attack on the FTTH (fibre to the home) and FTTB (fibre to the business) internet service provider in two weeks. Customers of Cool Ideas will experience some downtime, shoddy connections or just super slow speeds during this time, as their technicians rush to get the service up and running again. The ISP sent out an update late last night, saying that: “The DDOS attack has been mitigated throughout the day and we are seeing traffic levels normalize via alternative routes, we will update our social platforms should we see any change, the team is monitoring the situation. Thank you for your patience and apologies.” Hopefully, they can mitigate any future attacks by finding the person they pissed off and sorting out the beef.

Breaking Bad’s Jesse Pinkman is back, and in a movie teaser no less

Spoilers ahead if you haven’t binged through all five seasons of the gripping drug drama, Breaking Bad. Because El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, teased last week at the Emmys, will pick up right after the events of the finale. El Camino looks to be a thriller that finds Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) in the moments after breaking out from white supremacist incarceration. The film, which arrives later this year, will premiere exclusively on Netflix as well as ‘selected cinemas’ (of which there aren’t any in SA). In Breaking Bad’s final moments, Walter busted his former student out of a neo-Nazi drug den, where he’d been working in chains as their prisoner. And that was that — Jesse drove off into the sunset. El Camino will apparently answer some major questions. It comes out on 11 October, and we can’t wait. Check out the official Netflix teaser at the link below.
