Remember Samsung’s purported three-sided smartphone screen? Well, according to one source – a supplier of parts to the company – Samsung is currently testing it with a view to bringing it to mobile devices in the not-too-distant future.
We’ve known for a while that three-sided wraparound screens are possible (it’s all down to flexible display technology, in which Samsung has long been a pioneer) but this rumour indicates that it’s finally getting close to being deployed on consumer technologies.
Looking back, this could be what Samsung mobile senior vice-president, Kim Hyun-Joon, was talking about during an earnings call with investors. He told them that the company was working on two new high-end units but didn’t quite reveal too much on what they will be or look like.
All he mentioned about these mysterious units was that one would showcase a large screen, while the other would be created by means of “new materials”. So could this flexi-screen be the “new materials” he spoke of?
Sources say a three-sided display Samsung device could go into production by the end of the year. But the large-scale manufacture of one might be further down the roadmap, since the material is said to be difficult to work with and has limited availability.
Still, with curved screens long promised but never really arriving (the LG G Flex being the only notable example thus far) we’re hoping that Samsung can pull it off – and sooner rather than later.
