Nikon’s best known for making premium DSLRs. It also does binoculars and rifle scopes (true story), but has rarely put its name to dedicated video kit. Until it unveiled the KeyMission 360 at CES. Rather than being a tentative step into the world of GoPro and Garmin, the 4K KeyMission 360 enters the action cam fray with both barrels blazing. It’s a wearable camera that can capture 360° video in ultra high definition. How? By featuring an image sensor and lens on the device’s two opposite sides. Images captured are then combined to create 360° footage. VR READY Naturally, the…

It’s the beginning of the year which, in the world of tech, means two things: it’s time to shake off the festive season’s food-induced coma; and it’s time for CES. The Consumer Electronics Show is the world’s premier technology expo, filling several cavernous halls at the Las Vegas Convention Center with all that’s new in the worlds of home cinema, photography, computing, hi-fi, smartphones, cars and more. Stuff is, naturally, in attendance, and will be bringing you details of every major product (and doubtless some minor ones) that is announced this week. In the meantime, here’s what you can expect…

Since the release of Assassin’s Creed II in 2009, Ubisoft’s historical open-world action series has been an annual juggernaut, with a new core entry released each year-end and several spinoffs debuting alongside them. It’s been a lot, and it hasn’t always been a smooth ride: 2012’s Assassin’s Creed III was particularly buggy, and then 2014’s Assassin’s Creed Unity was even worse, delivering massive performance issues that took several patches to resolve. Luckily, last year’s London-set Assassin’s Creed Syndicate was a welcome return to form – but like we said, it’s still been a lot of that one series. And now it…

The iPhone 6s is already Apple’s most water-resistant smartphone to date, thanks to an adhesive lining inside the casing and seals on the logic board protectors. But it’s not advertised as a rugged, waterproof phone, and it could still be damaged by the elements. That may not be the case with future iPhones, if a newly unveiled patent application is any indication. According to AppleInsider, Apple has filed an application to cover a technology that uses “self-healing” elastomer (rubber) to automatically close up external ports when they’re not in use. “The self-healing elastomer may obscure the electronic connectors from the…

DJI has expanded its range of Zenmuse drone cameras with the XT – a camera that can see in the dark. The XT uses the same stabilised gimbal mount as the existing Zenmuse X3, X5 and X5R cameras, which means it can be fitted to either the Inspire 1 or Matrice M100 quadcopters. But it’s very different to those conventional digital cameras; thanks to its use of FLIR’s thermal imaging technology, it’s able to create images in total darkness. The XT’s images aren’t particularly large (just 640 x 512 in resolution), but they’re unlike anything else available on a consumer…

Marvel Studios’ own cinematic universe might have the most combined box office muscle, but Fox is still pumping out X-Men films, with last year’s Days of Future Past earning strong reviews and out-earning its predecessors. Days of Future Past mashed up the two X-casts: the modern-day group in the original film trilogy, and the formative 1970s versions from X-Men: First Class, and effectively sorted who would be left standing once everything went down. Now the franchise has a clearer path ahead with X-Men Apocalypse, with the first trailer releasing late last week. And that path leads it right to the…

Not content with iPhone 8 and Galaxy S7 rumours? You’re in luck. The LG G5 is the latest future flagship that’s taken centre stage in the online gossip show, as its specs have recently been leaked (and subsequently taken down) on Chinese site Weibo. If they’re true, we can expect to see a slightly larger 5.6in 2K display, along with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 processor. That’s the same chip we expect to see in the Samsung Galaxy S7 (or at least, in some variants of it), and leaked benchmark results for the processor look very promising indeed. We expect to see…

High quality renders of the Samsung Galaxy S7 have appeared online and, well, it looks almost identical to the current Galaxy S6. The renders come courtesy of uSwitch and seasoned leaker @OnLeaks, showing off a handset which many Android fans will be more than a little familiar with. The render matches up with a recent third-party case company’s design, in that a more rectangular home button can be seen, while the SIM slot has shifted to a lower position. Media fans will be sad to note that a microSD slot once again appears to be missing, which suggests that Samsung…

Oculus VR has officially revealed that each Rift headset will land with a full copy of Eve: Valkyrie, letting gamers jump straight into the VR action with no delay come launch day. The fast-paced first-person space shooter puts players directly into the cockpit of high-flying spaceships, letting them zip around, avoid obstacles and, of course, blow up enemy players. The multiplayer title appears to be a very solid launch title choice, and offers gamers a chance to become accustomed to the different control methods that VR offers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I76ylK7iEX4 Certain ships can, for example, be locked-on simply by looking at them,…

The Hyperloop is one of those technologies straight out of science fiction – a transportation tube that zips passengers from one location to another at 1,240km/h. If the idea of popping from Jozi to Durban and back in a day (the journey would take about 30 minutes each way) appeals as much as it seems impossible, you’ll find the latest news from the US encouraging. One of several companies exploring the idea of building a commercial Hyperloop has announced that it’ll be testing a real-world version in early 2016. Hyperloop Technologies has secured the necessary space to build a kilometre-long test track…
