My gamertag is more useful than a business card. I write about the tech industry, hardware, software, games, and motoring.

Back in 2015, Microsoft bought Wunderlist (arguably one of the best listing apps around at that time). It’s now clear that the company bought it just to siphon features to its own listing app called To Do. Sneaky bastards.  You would expect them to just use the app as-is and make some money off it, but apparently Wunderlist was built on Amazon Web Services (AWS). And that doesn’t fly with Microsoft, that has its own Azure servers. The next best thing was obviously to port the great features over to its own app.  But don’t panic just yet, there are…

Today Sonos announced a brand new product in its premium audio lineup — this time it’s a beast of a soundbar called Sonos Arc.  Arc functions as an immersive home theatre experience, including AI voice assistant smarts with Google Assistant, Alexa and Apple TV integration. It features cinema-quality sound as well as support for Dolby Atmos. Just imagine rewatching Avengers: Endgame on this bad boy.  “Home has never played a more important role in our lives and we’ve always been about making the home more enjoyable with great sounding products and new experiences. Arc brings the sounds of our favourite…

Today, Microsoft announced that it will bring the current Surface lineup of products to South Africa later this year. We, obviously, cannot wait.  It has always been a strange phenomenon reporting on Microsoft’s new Surface products in South Africa. They’re all so cool but it are always an absolute mission to import. Then you get the added bonus of no local after-sales service.  “Our intention is to bring our current Surface portfolio to South Africa by the end of the year,” Microsoft said. That means we’ll finally get first-hand access to some of the top laptop, PC and tablet tech…

It’s clear the biggest streaming service in the world, Netflix is pushing hard to get more diverse content onto the world stage that is TV. It is investing in locally created content from around the world, instead of pushing the Hollywood agenda we’ve been used to for some time.  With that, we’re elated to see that the second proudly African Netflix Original series will come to the platform on 20 May. Blood & Water follows the exploits of the intelligent, proactive and impulsive 16-year-old Puleng Khumalo. The female lead plans a transfer to an elite school to investigate the 17-year-old…

Yes, we know it’s been more than a month since the launch of Nintendo’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons Switch title, and there’s a reason for the late review. We couldn’t decide whether we love it or loathe it.  We reached a stage while playing this title where it wasn’t clear whether Tom Nook is adorable or unbearable. The fluffy dude started out okay, although we got a very culty feel from the whole Nook conglomerate. That was until we realised the faint similarity between Tom Nook and Tim Cook and now it’s obvious that Nook Inc. is just Apple.  Over…

R60 a month for unlimited access to music is a brilliant deal already, but at long last Spotify South Africa has launched its famous family plan in South Africa. What does that mean? It means your kids won’t mess up your perfectly tailored music recommendation algorithm.  The new Premium Family plan costs only R100 and allows for up to six users on one account. The equivalent in the US costs $16 (almost R300 at today’s exchange rate), so this is a brilliant deal for South Africans who live under the same roof.  “With Premium Family, all family members get uninterrupted…

This week, Vodacom announced pricing for its 5G packages in South Africa. The 5G mobile network will be available in three prominent cities of South Africa, namely Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town.  Vodacom’s 5G is available as a mobile network offering, as well as fixed-line services using a total of 20 5G sites. 18 of those are in Gauteng and two in Cape Town, but expansion is well on its way. Keen on some 5G goodness? The coverage map on Vodacom’s website looks a bit patchy. If you’re not located in the business hubs (like Sandton and Centurion or Midrand),…

The year is 2020, and the wacky scientist and his grandson who graced our TVs from late 2013 are finally back. The wait has been long and cumbersome, but we’ll see their not-so-friendly animated faces again for the second instalment of season four tonight. Stuff had the opportunity to interview Chris Parnell (that is the wonderfully sensitive father-character Jerry) about the upcoming content for Rick and Morty.  After a lengthy hiatus of three years, the fourth season aired late in 2019. But strangely, we only got to see the dynamic duo go on five new adventures. We’ve been waiting for…

Oh, how we’ve waited for this. The homemade burgers and chips lack a certain… mass-produced quality and we’re sick of it! Now that the country has received more detailed guidelines for the next level of lockdown, Level 4, we’ve got some good news for restaurants and people who don’t want to cook anymore.  The food delivery service, Mr D Food announced today that the service will open to restaurant food deliveries from Friday 1 May. “Following the announcement made last night, Mr D Food can confirm that they will resume full operation from tomorrow. Restaurants will be able to return…
