My gamertag is more useful than a business card. I write about the tech industry, hardware, software, games, and motoring.

We can all agree that top designers at Sony took at least some inspiration from the likes of The Fifth Element and Star Trek when designing its current-gen consoles and accessories. The same goes for its incoming virtual reality kit that is currently labelled PSVR 2, and it recently showed off the updated controller setup.  Sony’s new controllers look like something straight out of a 90’s sci-fi flick, and we’re absolutely here for it. Along with the wacky design reveal, the console-maker detailed some of the features we can expect from the setup. It is version 2.0, so we’ll expect…

BMW i4 BMW

First, there was the i8 — a top-of-the-range sporty EV, then there was the i3, the petite family hatch, and now BMW looks set to launch a larger sedan-sized EV called the i4. The i4 will be positioned as the true follow-up to the BMW i3, one of Stuff’s all-time favourite EVs (of which there isn’t much choice in South Africa). BMW, but make it green According to reports, the i4 could land on global roads by end of the year. More interestingly, however, BMW is promising an M Performance model of the fully electric variant.  The automaker showed off…

South Africans have a love/hate relationship with the data-only mobile operation, Rain. Its data is by far the cheapest available option, while its network is fairly unreliable sometimes. In addition to that, its customer service is questionable at the best of times, but people still like the idea of paying just R50 for a Gig.  It’s Raining towers Following its recent valuation, as published in the African Rainbow Capital Investment interim financial results for the six months leading up to 31 December 2020, Rain announced some interesting plans. As we know, the operator was the first in the country to…

Local broadcasters have recently slammed popular US-based streaming services for not investing in proudly South African content. Now, Netflix announced its partnership with the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), in which it’ll invest a combined amount of R28 million to fund local content production for the streaming platform.  Netflix and the NFVF will contribute R14 million each into the pool. The budget will be allocated specifically for “micro-budget” feature films, according to MyBroadband. Now, it’s looking for local talent in the form of movie pitches and directors to spend it on. It’ll fund six movies in total.  The funds…

We remember when curved displays came out as the next ‘big thing’ in display tech. Uptake was fairly slow, and many old-school display fans weren’t convinced. Same here. Until we got our hands on this TUF VG27WQ curved, 165Hz, 1ms response time gaming display. This thing’s packed with tech, and makes for a welcome addition to any gaming setup.  The monitor features a 2560×1440 res curved VA panel with a (relatively tight) 1.5-meter radius (1500R) curvature. You also get 400 nits brightness, a 3000:1 contrast ratio, a 1ms response time, and a maximum refresh rate of 165Hz. Of course, PC…

Fairly deep into 2020, Pick n Pay announced its own MVNO service. That allows them to operate as a mobile and voice network operator, able to dish out SIM cards at will and allocate airtime/data to those SIM cards. Now it looks like Shoprite is following suit with its own mobile network service According to TechCentral, CEO Pieter Engelbrecht this week said: “Very soon we will launch our own virtual network to enhance our customer data even further.” Shoprite Mobile incoming Even though this is by no means revolutionary, it must be said that Shoprite is currently Africa’s largest brick-and-mortar…

Considering PayPal was invented by an ex-South African (ahem… Mr Musk), you would expect accessing the global wallet service would be easier in the South of Africa. Unfortunately, however, it’s always been a mission to withdraw funds from PayPal into a South African bank account. So far, only FNB has an account that can receive funds from the global wallet.  Welcome to the neighbourhood, PayPal Now, an African fintech called Flutterwave has announced a partnership with PayPal that will allow all its customers the ability to send money directly to merchants based in Africa. It’s called the ‘Pay with PayPal…

In just about two hours, OneDayOnly managed to sell a whole luxury apartment through its daily deals app. Something we’d never thought we’d report on, but here we all are.  The apartment, located in Cape Town, sits in the higher-end complex called The Tokyo and was originally listed for R950,000. It managed pulled some strings and managed to list the property at just R800,000 through its online platform. If your quick calculations aren’t up to scratch, that’s a R150,000 saving on an apartment.  OneDayOnly entered the chat As always, the online retailer listed the ‘item’ at 12am, and it was…

Last year bore some unsatisfactory events, but if there was one that stood out as… something particularly exciting, it’s that Microsoft finally decided to bring its Surface kit to South Africa. June 2020 graced South Africans with more options when it comes to office machines in the shapes of the Surface Go 2, the Surface Pro 7 and the Surface Laptop 3. Now we’re getting the cream of the crop — the Surface Book 3, for a pretty penny too. Below the Surface If you think about one of these machines, the image of the Surface Book 3 should pop…

The US government is still out on a virtual witch-hunt, essentially making work of stigmatising Chinese telecoms hardware and services. Following a two-year-long debacle between former US president Donald Trump and Huawei, the new administration looks set to continue down the blacklisting path with Xiaomi. Lucky for Xiaomi, a US judge has placed a temporary halt its inclusion on a US blacklist.  Show me the Xiaomi This comes after Xiaomi decided to take the US government to court for trying to place it on a military blacklist. This is different to the Entity List (that’s where Huawei and its subsidiaries…
