I completed a Masters Degree just so someone might take my opinions seriously one day. Also writes about video games over at Critical Hit.

I’m a young man, I don’t shy aware from this fact. While others on the Stuff team might bemoan all the back and neck aches due to their age, I want it on record that I simply don’t do that. I mean, I complain about my frail spine but that’s because I sit funny, not because I’m old. The two might be related in a future though. This is all to say that I’m at an age where I missed the hype around the Quake franchise. All I know is that they’re old-school shooters that were played at events called…LANs? I don’t know…

So you might remember, there’s a little bit of a global pandemic going on at the moment. A few months ago, Stuff was writing about how social media platforms were doing their best to help stop the spread of false information regarding COVID-19 and trying to raise awareness of the problem to as wide an audience as possible. Yet, in typical fashion, it turns out that there are enough stupid people in the world that several months later Facebook is still trying to warn people about the coronavirus. While its taken steps to remove misinformation propagated by users on the platform, its going…

Without anyone ever actually realising it, Netflix went and made one of the most iconic sounds of the internet. You’ve definitely heard it before, despite how brief the very minimalist jingle is; It plays at the start of every Netflix Original. Actually, I could just type it out and I’m sure you’d be able to hear it playing in your mind: “Ta-Dum”. Those two notes are Netflix’s mark of branding placed on all their productions and while it’s incredibly effective for a format that encourages quick media consumption, it’s just a little too brief for a cinema going experience. So to fix…

Everyone is getting in on the fold lately. Who can blame them? I’ve often waxed lyrical about the power of a good hinge. Yet just because a hinge can be cool doesn’t mean every phone should have one, as proven by the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Flip. Yet the failings of others often pave the route of success for those willing to learn from everyone else’s mistakes, which is exactly what Microsoft appears to be doing with the Surface Duo phone and it’s dual screen which, I have to admit, looks really cool. What makes the device even…

We in South Africa like to complain about a lot of things. We have every right to, of course! The government is a mess, unemployment rates continue to rise and for some ungodly reason the Chocolate Log, otherwise known as the best chocolate in the entire Southern hemisphere, has been removed from stores all over the country. It’s enough to make anyone cry, yet while all that bad stuff is no doubt a factor, at least we don’t have to constantly worry about earthquakes splitting the ground open beneath us. That’s a real blessing for us but for countries where…

It’s the biggest stand-off of the year; Sony and Microsoft are waiting for the other company to cave and announce both the release date and price of its next generation console. Both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X were confirmed to release at the end of 2020 yet beyond that vague ballpark of a window, specifics have remained scarce. Thus, Microsoft’s recently confirmed slightly more specific release window (still without a price) has no doubt served as a warning show across Sony’s bow that the company is gearing up to make their final wave of Series X preparations…even if the…

While it may be tricky to get some Google tech running on your Huawei phone after that whole kerfuffle between Donald Trump and the Chinese tech giant, one group of apps that haven’t been impacted nearly as badly after the whole “trade ban” is games. The Huawei App Gallery is stuffed with games, good and bad, and the company is very much aware of this. Hence the introduction of Huawei GameCenter, a new hub that brings mobile gamers together to share experiences, enjoy new games and keep up to date with all the latest news. I mean, that’s what Huawei…

We’re all busy people, we know that. Sometimes having an instant messaging app relegating to a single device just doesn’t cut it, dammit! Sure, it’s just another way that the internet has driven capitalism to an ever invasive force of excess production, fusing private and work lives into one ungodly combination that just leads to extreme levels of stress not felt by any generation before ours. But enough of that depressing reality, let’s talk about how  WhatsApp is working on functionality that will allow users to send messages from four different devices at the same time! Why would you ever…

Batten down the hatches, folks. We’re in for another wild bout of economic warfare between America and China that probably won’t actually have much of an effect on the everyday consumer but it’s still really interesting to see how the chaos plays out. Much like the trade ban instilled on Huawei by Donald Trump, the president of the United States has set his sights even higher, going for the ambitious target of Tencent. Now, you might not know who Tencent is but I absolutely guarantee that you’ve used a product, app or service the company either owns or has shares…

One of the most difficult aspects of reviewing hardware is separating the device from the cost. It’s something I’ve battled with in previous reviews yet an issue that I’ve struggled with more than anything else during my time with the Doogee Y9 Plus. This is a handset that’s very clearly going for the lowest end of the market it can possibly appeal to while still doing it’s best to offer a high quality user experience. I respect that, more people should be able to have some aspect of their life improved in a world being ever consumed by the internet,…
