Huawei does most of its business in China, despite how prolific the brand seems. It shouldn’t be surprising that the new Nova 15 Ultra is arriving in that country first, but if you’re paying attention (as we always are), it’s a handy preview of what’s coming down the pipe for South Africa later.
The company has unveiled the Nova 15 series, including the Pro and Ultra models, via an online store in its native China. A full reveal is only slated for 22 December, but there’s plenty of visuals to take in, as well as details of the handset(s) heading to market from 26 December this year.
Super Nova 15 Ultra
Most of what can be gleaned about the phone is based on visual inspection. The Nova 15 Ultra sports a massive camera bump containing two sizable rings inside the rectangle. One of these rings hosts three camera sensors, the exact specs of which aren’t known. The second houses the LED flash, as well as two (slightly mysterious) additional sensors.
Dual cameras are embedded in the 15 Ultra’s display, either for advanced selfie photography or for added facial recognition security. Storage options are known — 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB, as befitting an ‘Ultra’-branded handset, will become available next week.
The Huawei Nova 15 Pro keeps the camera bump, while slightly altering the configuration. One of the two sensors in the right-hand ring has been omitted, but since we don’t know what it is yet, we’re not sure whether to be miffed. Odds are that the camera specs overall will match, whether buyers opt for the Nova 15 Ultra or the 15 Pro.
The base model Nova 15 loses quite a bit of the camera tech, as well as that monstrous rear bump. Two camera sensors, a couple of other slots, and a single selfie camera are present in the more basic smartphone.
Of these, we’re most likely to see the Nova 15 Pro and the base model in South Africa — if the company’s behaviour this year is any indication, at least.
