It wasn’t all that long ago that we bemoaned PlayStation and South African distributor, Koodoo, for the absurd R19,500 price tag attached to the PS5 Pro before it eventually launched locally in December 2024. Those gamers who missed out then won’t have a price decrease to look forward to, but rather an increase to the tune of R1,500.
With Xbox safely out of the way, Sony can do what it likes
That’s roughly the price of a standard DualSense controller, an expensive and sought-after companion to an already outrageously priced console. Now, South African gamers are expected to pay as much as R21,000 for the privilege of more frames and higher resolutions (in conjunction) than the regular five-year-old PS5 or Slim.
You might still be lucky enough to find the PS5 Pro at its original starting price, or cheaper. According to Glitched, some retailers (like Makro and Takealot) have stuck with the old price until stocks run out, after which it will fall in line with the new R21,000 local pricing. Amazon, too, currently lists the console for R18,200 on sale.

It’s not all bad news. Retailers have also confirmed that the PS5 Disc Drive, which is not included with the PS5 Pro (or Slim), and must be purchased separately (or as part of a bundle), will see a small price decrease. Initially starting at R3,000, the drive has now dropped to R2,000, though we can only find listings at R2,300.
There’s no such luck for the Pro’s vertical stand, which is also sold separately. Sony has, unfortunately, stuck with the same R700 price that it feels is fair for a small piece of plastic. The PS5 Slim, which replaced the base console a few years back, has also not seen a price change, although it has risen to R13,000 since it launched in 2024.
