There’s an awful lot of digits in our headline, but if you’re into your PC gaming tech, you already know what the LG UltraGear OLED 27GX790A gaming monitor is all about. LG reckons that its 480Hz gaming monitor is built for “elite-level performance,” and the company probably isn’t wrong.
There is a slight caveat, though. LG’s 27in 4K OLED screen (and the company rarely puts a foot wrong with 4K OLED) does indeed operate at 480Hz, but it’ll only do so at an HD resolution. At full resolution, it’ll top out at a mere 240Hz. Still, switching between the two is a breeze.

There’s plenty more to drool over besides LG’s Dual Mode tech, as long as you make sure you’re not dripping on your mechanical keyboard. The 27in OLED screen features a 0.03ms grey-to-grey response time, Nvidia’s G-Sync and AMD’s FreeSync are both supported, and the monitor features a couple of VESA ratings that should ensure it will “handle the intensity of ultra-competitive gameplay with minimal motion blur and deep, rich blacks.”
Connections are via DisplayPort 2.1 or dual HDMI 2.1 ports, meaning you can connect everything from a gaming rig to the newest consoles. If you connect an office PC to the UltraGear OLED 27GX790A, LG probably won’t complain, but every other PC gamer on the planet will probably feel a slight shudder every time you fire up Microsoft Excel. Audio routes through a four-pole headphone jack in the monitor body, providing DTS Headphone:X audio to lucky users. The stand also features a -30° to +30° swivel range.
LG IT business unit head Bradley Stuart said, “This is our fastest OLED yet – and our smartest. From exceptional refresh rates to immersive audio and smart connectivity, the UltraGear OLED 27GX790A is engineered to elevate every aspect of the gaming experience.”
If you want one — and be honest, you do — it’ll cost a small bundle. LG’s newest UltraGear hardware is presently available directly from the company for R22,000. Shipping, as far as we can see, is free.
