If you’ve been making money selling old stuff on Facebook Marketplace, then Seller, a new app from Meta, is for you. Or, rather, it will be once it gets this side of the planet. The platform is expanding to allow users to create full storefronts, potentially setting it up as a competitor to eBay and similar websites.
It’s not certain how much demand there is for this sort of thing from Meta, but the company is going to try anyway. As with Storykit, Seller looks like another experimental avenue for the company to flex its artificial intelligence muscles.
Into the Seller with you
How? Well, Seller will include a new hub for folks who sell products on Facebook Marketplace. It’ll also include AI-powered features that “fill in the details like title, description, price suggestion, and category, so you can publish fast.” A dedicated sales inbox, inventory management, and performance data are also included in the new, dedicated Marketplace app.
The new app, currently available on the App Store, isn’t for the sorts of folks who list an old household product for a quick turnaround. It’s more for the sort of person with a high tolerance for ‘Is this available?’ messages and the ability to counter dozens of offers of 30% of the listed asking price. Either the app will take off and repopulate Facebook Marketplace with folks selling cheap China-made products, or it’ll very quietly join Meta’s ‘failed ideas’ graveyard of stuff that could have worked.
