We said back in March that the rumours wouldn’t be the last you heard about Half-Life 3, and would you look at that, it’s back in the news cycle.
This time, new rumours claim that Valve has all but finished its development and that it’s “playable, end-to-end,” meaning an official announcement could come as early as this summer, or winter for us southerners.
Half-Life 3, any day now
The latest round of speculation comes from Tyler McVicker, a reputable Valve leaker, who held a Q&A live stream on 30 April. During this, he said the still-unofficial follow-up to the Half-Life franchise was playable from start to finish, which he reckons could mean an imminent announcement.
This news corroborates previous rumours in March, along with other tidbits like Valve concept artist Evgeniy Evstratiy claiming to be in the room where Valve made HL3. All that, together with the ‘HLX’ references Valve-focused data miner Gabe Follower uncovered, gives further credence to the new Half-Life game coming soon.
As promising as all the rumours might seem, we’d still take them with the prescribed pinch of salt until Valve officially confirms them.
Valve president Gabe Newell has previously said his company didn’t want to make a follow-up for the sake of it and would wait until there was new technology to showcase.
That’s easy to believe. The gap between Half-Life 2: Episode 2 and Half-Life: Alyx was fourteen years. When rumours of Valve’s latest Half-Life game surfaced, everyone thought it would be Half-Life 3, and it wasn’t. We could be in for more of the same. We’re not getting our hopes up, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed.
