It took a while (or several long whiles), but Fujifilm has finally introduced the Instax Mini 13 to South Africa. Announced overseas back in March of this year, the Mini 13 unsurprisingly serves as a successor to one of our favourite Instax cameras — the Mini 12. The retro-lookin’ snapper is on shelves now, with a price of R1,750.

The Mini 13 isn’t quite boasting a whole new look, but Instax has made some attempt at a visual refresh. Instax calls it “playful,” but we call it just different enough to warrant an upgrade. It’s retained the same basic square shape, but now with more rounded, sculpted corners, and a ‘metallic silver logo’ stuck to the camera’s front. It’ll be available in several colours: Candy Pink, Clay White, Frost Blue, Dreamy Purple, and Lagoon Green.
Instax isn’t just selling you a metallic logo. One of the key additions to the Mini 13 is the dual self-timer, adding a ten- or two-second delay to shots. The former makes it that much easier for the taker to get into the frame themselves, while the two-second timer promises to make selfies easier and “blur-free.” It’s not a bad idea, really.

The camera uses a 60mm f/12.7 fixed-focus lens, capable of focusing on its subject from a distance of 0.3m to 0.5m. You’ll use the camera’s lens barrel to switch into the returning Close-Up mode. Automatic flash control is also included, automatically adjusting your picture gains depending on the mood being set. Also new is a “wedge-shaped angle adjustment accessory,” which allows the Mini 13 to prop itself up on the go; no tripod needed.
If it’s just the Mini 13 you’re after, you can have it for R1,750 starting today. If you’ve got bigger pockets than that, Fujifilm also confirmed an Instax Mini 13 kit, which includes the camera, a carry case, and a single pack of film.
