Information discovered in the YouTube app suggests the platform is about to roll out more social media features. A new standalone app called Tamba is being developed. At least, that’s according to the app teardown done by Android Authority.
The title appears to be firm, rather than a codename. The website uncovered branding for the new experience, as well as social network-like functions baked into the app. The app’s package name (com.google.android.youtube.sandbox) suggests Tamba is more of a test than a full, impending launch.

The social media aspects coming to the YouTube derivative include: bookmarks, notifications, followers, friend requests, direct messages, and others. Image and video sharing, group chats, and other functions also seem to be involved. You’ll recognise most of these from whichever social media platform you use most frequently. All of these seem to have icons already in existence, suggesting an advanced test, at the very least.
What isn’t clear is how Tamba connects to Google’s greater video-sharing ecosystem. Will it be the same YouTube videos and recommendations, with the comments section more emphasised? The platform’s comments section was notorious for being an awful place to hang out. Is Google after a specific audience, hoping to claw market share from X, Instagram, or TikTok? Will Tamba only show Shorts? How, exactly, does Google intend to harvest more user data from its still-unannounced app? What, when it comes down to it, will the mandatory AI integration look like?
It’s also entirely possible that Tamba will never see the light of day. Android Authority stresses that the app’s existence is known only from an APK (Android Package Kit) teardown. There’s no sign of a dedicated app, and Google has yet to make any announcements in this direction. We may never see what YouTube looks like refocused as a social network. Given the platform’s past, that might be the best course of action.
