Huawei’s tri-folding sequel, the Mate XT 2, may have launched earlier than expected in China, which means we could get our hands on one sooner. The company, via consumer business chairman Richard Yu, has confirmed that it’ll soon depart China for other markets.
Yu was speaking at an International Media Roundtable, with his remarks later posted on social media platform X. We’re expecting South Africa to be one of the XT 2’s destinations, given that the original Mate XT was (surprisingly) launched here.

“We’ll gradually make this tri-fold phone available in the overseas market. Many users in the Middle East and Asia Pacific love it. I also hope that we can bring it to other markets like Europe,” said Yu. Huawei’s chairman added that the Mate XT 2 is “selling very well, and demand currently exceeds supply.”
Further details about the device’s launch in other markets weren’t explored. Given that South Africa saw a launch of the previous model in April 2025, we could see this one land around March 2027. It’s unlikely to show up this year.
You’ll want it to, assuming you can afford the price tag. Aside from the tri-folding design, the XT 2 arrives packing (at least in the Ultimate version) a 10.2in inner display, a 6.5in cover panel, and one of Huawei’s Kirin 9050 Pro CPUs. It’ll feature a minimum of 16GB of RAM, with 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage options.
The camera setup, as expected, follows the same 50/50/40MP arrangement as the previous model. IP58/59 ratings are in place for (some) protection, and there’s a 5,600mAh battery to keep the whole thing running. Unfolded, the phone measures around 4mm, so that’s probably a reason the power pack isn’t a little larger.
