There’s no shortage of mid-range phones in the world, and now Oppo has just added another to the pile. Unveiled today in China, Oppo’s A7 Pro is officially up for pre-order, with the star of the show being the 8,000mAh battery. It’s got all the hallmarks of being a decent mid-ranger. If it can nail the price locally, that is.

History tells us… that might not be the case. Last year’s Oppo A6 Pro felt a tad overpriced at R11,000, while the base Oppo A6 started at R9,000. With the direction the world is currently headed, we don’t see those numbers going down anytime soon. We can dream, however, that the A7 Pro will be the start of something new.
There’s nothing new to see where the screen is concerned. It’s still rocking the same 6.57in AMOLED (1,080 x 2,372px) display that’ll cap out at 1,400 nits of brightness. The screen isn’t averse to some gaming with a 120Hz refresh rate. The bigger issue will be getting the MediaTek Dimensity 6360 Max SoC on board. Buyers can pair it up with either 6 or 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB storage that can be bumped with a microSD card.

Oppo’s done some work in trimming the fat, most notably when it comes to the cameras ’round the back. It’s still got a 50MP shooter attached, though now with an f/1.9 aperture, while the front camera drops to 8MP with an f/2.1 aperture. Then there’s the 8,000mAh battery (and 45W charging) that’s plastered all over the marketing.
A bigger battery is one of the loudest requests for smartphones. The other is price. In China, the Oppo A7 Pro with 6GB of RAM is available for CNY 2,200, or R5,230 converted directly. The 8GB variant goes for CNY 2,500, or R5,940. A local launch hasn’t yet been confirmed for South Africa, but with the ‘A’ Series’ roots within the country, we could see it landing here in a couple of months. Pricing, we hope, will be reasonable.
