As expected, Huawei’s Pura X Max has turned up in all of its widescreen glory. The Chinese company announced the phone for its local market earlier this week. As with most Huawei products, it’ll likely leave China for other locations in the next few months.
Admiring the folding smartphone from afar isn’t a problem either. The display is broad enough that we can make out the subtitles from here. Okay, fine, it’s not quite that stunning — the internal screen is still just 7.7in in size. But the change in aspect ratio could be attractive for many users.

Since it’s official now, we can pore over everything Huawei has crammed inside. The outer display of the new foldable measures just 5.4in, making this a more pocketable variant of the smartphone form factor. The exterior 120Hz screen has a resolution of 1,264 x 1,848, while the inner 7.7in OLED sports a 1,828 x 2,584 resolution.
Huawei’s own Kirin 9030 Pro 5G, also as expected, makes an appearance. At least 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage are present, but buyers can spec up to 16GB/1TB if they want to. The rear camera array sticks three sensors onto the rear outer panel. Dual 50MP cameras, one a 3.5x periscope telephoto, and a 12.5MP ultrawide occupy space there. 8MP sensors live on the two display surfaces, with the display cover getting a slightly wider aperture version.
66W wired charging and a 5,300mAh battery keep the Pura X Max going. If you’ve got up to a 40W wireless charging surface, it’ll support that too. An IP58/IP59 rating should enhance survivability, while the handset’s new stylus support could make for some interesting multirole use cases. Huawei’s M-Pencil 3 Mini is supported. It’ll bump the price up, most likely.
Speaking of prices, last week’s pricing was on the nose. That only confirms Chinese pricing, however, with the Pura X Max starting at around R26,500 and going all the way to R33,800 for the most expensive edition.
