Sony may have jacked up the price of PS Plus, and now the PS5 console itself requires one sacrificial kidney before it’ll come home with you – all in the name of righting global economic chaos. But hey, the console’s uber-nostalgic retro themes have returned, this time for good!
Just like the good ol’ days, AKA December

You may have to tread carefully to avoid slipping in the snark, but the return of the PS5’s awesome nostalgic themes, which hit the console for a short period last year, is certainly welcome. It’s just that much harder to swallow when it comes at the cost of… more costs.
The themes, which incidentally are the only ones currently available on the PS5 despite both the PS3 and PS4 supporting hundreds of them, offer players the ability to reskin the console’s home page with a refurbished UI of old. Missing those futuristic glass blocks of the PS2? Just enable it under the Appearance tab in the Settings.

Unfortunately, Sony has officially ditched the PS1 boot-up screen that accompanied the limited-time update – likely to help the PS5 cling to whatever semblance of personality it still has, rather than have users immediately go back to the old way of things. If anything, it should be a clear indicator that whatever culture Sony is cultivating in the current gen just… isn’t working.
Sony mentioned that the software update would roll out globally, starting today, as part of a “phased approach,” meaning you may have to wait a couple of hours or days before the update arrives. Also included is a new ‘Audio Focus’ feature that’ll give players the ability to better control the audio they want more of when listening through a headset, whether it be voices, high-pitched sounds, or even quiet sounds.
