Meta’s Project Cambria VR headset leaks a month before its official announcement

If you actually care about the metaverse, then you’ll be pleasantly surprised that the upcoming ‘Project Cambria‘ has leaked. The leak was first posted to Reddit and then to Facebook, unsurprisingly. The device was left behind in a hotel room before Ramiro Cardenas posted the video on Facebook. It gave us the name of the headset – ‘Meta Quest Pro’, which has been teased as ‘Project Cambria’ for nearly a year.

The cat’s out of the bag

From Meta’s point of view, the timing of the leak couldn’t be worse. October brings us Meta’s Connect Event, which is when the headset was to be officially unveiled, according to Mark Zuckerberg. Luckily, or perhaps unluckily for Meta, the vast majority of people aren’t invested in the metaverse in the slightest. The leak won’t lower any reputations (they can’t get any lower) and might potentially excite unaware customers of the new product.

Watching the video gives us our best look yet at the headset. Cardenas, the video’s poster, opens the box up, revealing the black headset and a set of controllers. The box itself has the words ‘Meta Quest Pro’ stamped on it, with “Not for resale – engineering sample,” underneath.

Whether the leak is real or fake, we’ll never know. It’s possible a Meta employee accidentally left the device behind. It’s also possible that it was all a marketing ploy to get a larger interest in Meta as a whole. Even if that were the case, it probably won’t help the Meta Quest Pro’s lifespan.
