Just when you thought it was safe to leave your lights on, Eskom has returned with an all-new round of load shedding. Stage 2 is back from this evening at 16:00 until 22:00. It’ll resume on Wednesday morning and continue through until Saturday.

The good news is that we’re all getting a break from load shedding from 22:00 to 05:00 every day until Saturday. Provided, that is, nothing else goes wrong. It’s all Stage 2 for the moment, but that doesn’t mean that Stage 4 isn’t hiding around the corner.

The current bout of shedding is the result of several breakdowns. Arnot, Duvha, Kendal, Medupi, and Tutuka have all seen units trip. Koeberg Nuclear Power Station bombed out last weekend. Hendrina power station is also experiencing issues coming back online.
Almost 21,000MW of generation capacity is out of service. 4,588MW is out due to maintenance and 16,142MW is out as a result of breakdowns. Provided our outages remain more or less here, Stage 2 will be the worst we experience this week. Hopefully, some units will come online early, providing us with a weekend that includes lights and power.
