Sony’s PlayStation VR2 to hit shelves early 2023

PlayStation VR2 is due to be released in early 2023

Sony’s Playstation VR2 will be available for purchase in early 2023. The Japanese corporation announced the release on Twitter and Instagram with the caption “Coming early 2023.”

Consumers will have to wait until after the festive season. It does however fall within the typical 4 – 7 year launch cycle since the gen-one launch in 2016. While we’ve been receiving bits of information for several months now, and finally have a date to look forward to.

Where VR2?

We’ve been teased with details of the new VR headset since the orb-controller reveal in March 2021. A year later, PlayStation VR2 hardware renders showed a design akin to the PlayStation 5. The decision is more than just cosmetic as the VR2 is made to only be compatible with the PS5.

The move to the current generation comes with an upgraded resolution of 2,000 x 2,040 and a 110-degree field-of-view. The new “inside-out” camera, allows you to see your surroundings. Another upgrade from its PS4 predecessor with an external camera.

Over 20 ‘major’ titles will be available for the long-awaited headset. The list includes a VR version of Resident Evil Village and exclusives like Horizon: Call of the Mountain.

Healthy competition

Sony isn’t the only one making moves in the virtual reality market. The PS VR2 already has its “inside-out” camera in common with the Oculus Quest 2 of 2020. Meta’s next high-level VR headset, Project Cambria is expected to be released in September this year. As Project Cambria looks to target “people trying to get work done”, Meta intends to release four headsets in total by 2024.

Apple is also expected to grab a piece of the VR pie with its long-rumoured mixed reality headset. With reports of a potential reveal in January 2023, the VR2 is in for some stiff competition.
