Pick n Pay teams up with Takealot, so you get your groceries through Mr D

Pick n Pay Takealot

You know what would be very convenient? Being able to buy your everyday groceries in the same app you used to buy that food you really shouldn’t be eating (for the fifth time this week). Well, here we are. Pick n Pay and Takealot have signed a new deal that will bring the grocery chain’s food, alcohol, and household items to the Mr D app.

The move, which totally has nothing to do with Checkers’ upward mobility, will see the Mr Delivery app split in two. When users open the app, they’ll be asked whether they want groceries or restaurant food. If they select ‘groceries’, well…

Pick n Pay for it

Assuming you’re using the app for your weekly shopping and not to numb the pain, a “…dedicated Pick n Pay food and grocery experience” will open up. From there, shopping may be done as normal. And, once your basket is full, the nearest PnP store will pack your order. So they’ll be collecting your location data, then. But at least the Smart Shopper program will be supported, so they’ll be collecting your shopping habits as well.

Finally, the order is collected and delivered by one of those lovely Takealot/Mr D delivery drivers. It’s just like ordering garbage food. Only you can get bleach and cat food and things, too. Also, beer.

Pick n Pay CEO Pieter Boone said, “By working with the Takealot Group, customers will now be able to benefit from a bigger, better, faster, and more exciting offer. It will be the best of Pick n Pay now on Mr D, and benefiting from Takealot Group’s industry-leading platforms and service standards.”

“The combination of Pick n Pay’s reach, quality, and pricing together with Takealot Group’s leading technology and scalable delivery network is a recipe for success,” added Takealot CEO Kim Reid.

The service will launch in August this year, in a limited capacity. A test drive will start in Cape Town, before expanding to other parts of South Africa. The plan is to cover the entire country by 2023.
