Huawei announces South African launch pricing, availability of its new Watch GT 3

Huawei Watch GT 3 main

Huawei has a new wearable landing in the South African market, effective… immediately. The company has announced that its new Watch GT 3 is now available, in SA stores and from Huawei’s online shop.

The successor to the Watch GT 2, which launched in SA in 2019, aims to bring its range of wrist-borne smarts to more people than ever. That’s because there are three distinct versions of the smartwatch, plus a Watch 3 Runner edition to look out for. The starting price? R5,000 — which is one par with the GT 2’s R5,000 launch price.

Huawei supposed to resist?

The 42mm or 46mm black GT 3 model is the sportiest of the lot. The 46mm device with its sedate brown finish would be more at home in a boardroom. And the 42mm gold… we’re actually not sure where you’d use the gold one, but it’s there if you want it. And want to pay for it.

Inside, though, they’re mostly the same. They all run HarmonyOS 2.1, offer TrueSeen 5.0 heart-rate tracking, as well as “…continuous, real-time, and accurate SpO2, sleep, stress and menstrual cycle monitoring.” It tracks more than 100 workout modes, of which six are dedicated indoor workouts. Software additions AI Running Coach and Healthy Living Shamrock are designed to add a fitness assistant to your wrist. We can’t wait to see whether they’re a decent addition or just a gimmick.

As far as pricing goes, the Huawei Watch GT 3 Active 42mm (the black one) starts at R5,000. The 46mm Active is R5,500, as is the 46mm Classic (brown) edition. And if you’re keen on a little gold, you can pick up the 42mm Elegant (gold, naturally) version for R7,000. Each device, if bought from the company itself, nets a free pair of Huawei’s Sports Bluetooth Earphones.

Then there’s the Watch GT Runner, which throws in a set of Huawei’s Freelace headphones for its R7,500 price. Designed for… well, runners, it’s lightweight and offers more advanced GPS and heart-rate tracking. Plus, you know, everything else the less athletic Watch GT 3 options can do.

Absolutely must have a new Huawei Watch GT 3 in your life? You can snag all the launch bundles over at the company’s online store. We’ll have a review up just as soon as we can get a review device out of Huawei — which shouldn’t be hard at all.
