DStv’s app update breaks more than it fixes

Less than a week ago, the Multichoice-owned DStv mobile and smart TV apps received a few long-overdue user interface updates. Ever since then, users have complained about the app’s functionality on a variety of platforms. It seems the update came with a few extensive and app-bricking bugs that have users… pretty gatvol.

The recent update featured a few major redesigns like shifting menus, redesigned navigation for both live TV and on-demand content, and a “better watching experience overall” according to the company’s update notes. It’s become clear that the last part was a lie. 

“The new app freezes all the time please check all the complaints on twitter. Our user experience has become very bad,” a Stuff reader explained. 

Complaints have already reached beyond social media, and reviewers have also taken to the Google Play Store to voice their concerns. 

“Since the update it’s been terrible, issues galore! Most recent right now being selecting a channel sends me to a blank screen, tried everything. Would go back to the older version in a heartbeat if possible,” one disgruntled user detailed on the Play Store while justifying their 1-star rating. 

Multichoice said it is aware of the issues, and they are currently attending to them. This is according to MyBroadband. “We are aware of the issues some customers experienced with the DStv App last week. A number of fixes have been deployed to resolve all the highlighted issues,” it said.

“We continue to work on our product to ensure that customers always get the best viewing experience no matter what device they use to consume our content.”

Software, and especially subscription services, have become so commonplace that users now instantly realise when its functionality is lacking. DStv isn’t only going up against the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime video in terms of content, but equally so in terms of user experience. Be better, DStv.
